I'm sure many got the impression that Madara's sharingan resembled not just a kaleidescrope pattern, but a clock or sundial as well, especially with the way it spun.
If anyone here has ever played the original tomb raider (which I doubt) or at least its remake called TR: Anniversary, the Scion was the clock-like artifact Lara sought in it that powered the lost city of atlantis, as well as destroyed it. One of it's three alien rulers, who bears a striking resemblance to Kaguya in appearance and character used forbidden biogenesis knowledge, much like Madara to unlock its full power and use it to turn atlantis's people into an army of flesh-eating mutants to take over the world and its pyramid into an incubatium for them. Before she could succeed however, the other two rulers stopped and sealed her (lols), but she broke out thousands of years later and disguised herself as a corporate engineer CEO before hiring Lara to find the artifact for her.
Kishimoto has stated before that he was inspired by several fantasy games. (Yes, I know the tale of the bamboo cutter).
