Theres actually religous ties to Itachi and Orochimaru squaring off in Sasuke and Itachi's fight.

Susano'O was a japanese god that slayed the monster Yamata no Orochi, and then subsequently finding a sacred sword called Kusanagi.

if i remember correctly, tsunade, jiraiya, and orochimaru come from some folktale, religious tale, legend or something too... Only that jiraiya was acutaly married to tsunade
