Prepare yourself for tragedy:
chapter seven: the song of the sea for the ocean village*
SEVERAL HOURS EARLIER
He blinked his eyes open, then squinted in confusion. This wasn't his room.
It was Uri's.
He sat up, gripping his stomach and face. The wounds had barely healed. Usually he healed quickly, but Uzumaki inflicted injuries took forever since they placed a seal to slow the wounds' "time" down.
Rubbing the sleep from his eyes, he turned the lights on. Someone had left his clothes by the table, so he changed.
"Oww." He squeezed his left elbow. "Don't open, don't open..."
He left, freezing with one foot out the door. The light from the council room was on, and it was deathly quiet except for one sound.
A sound one only made when someone close had died.
He raced over there, finding every last Uzumaki there. The veterans were acting strange, looking at him with sympathy and guilt.
Naruto pushed through, slapping hands away.
"Stop."
"You don't want to see."
"Go back."
Then Tsuna was in front of him, blocking his way.
"Partner--"
Naruto shoved him out of the way and gasped.
Kairi's mother was holding her limp, pale, lifeless body in her arms and crying her eyes out. Her father sat there, his hands hovering over her head as silent tears hit closed from his eyes. The other children were crying into their parents shoulders.
"What is this ...?" Naruto stalked over, horrified and confused. "I don't--"
"It was Seto." Uri told him, pulling him back.
Naruto looked over his shoulder. "While we were sleeping, Kairi teleported you to my room and disguised herself as you. Apparently she'd figured out how far he was going to go. She saved you..."
Naruto was horrified by this and half screamed before stumbling away, with his hands knotting through his hair.
Kairi was twelve. Her birthday was a week ago. She was so innocent and tiny, and harmless. How could she be dead?
He grit his teeth, crying.
"How could he do such a thing?!" He snapped, looking at Kairi. He wanted to hold her and cry over her too, but at the same time he didn't want to take her away from her mother.
"He's killed one of our own." Mako, a veteran, growled. "He needs to be disposed of."
Kairi's father clenched his fists helplessly.
"You're asking the impossible." He buried his face in one hand and punched the ground with other. "He's the strongest among us."
Naruto let his arms fall, swinging helplessly.
EVERYBODY LOVES YOU!
"Screw that." He punched his palm. "I'll defeat him no matter what!"
Mako squinted at him. “You are only a half-blood. How can we entrust this to you?”
Naruto locked eyes with him. “I am one of you! And because Seto was trying to kill ME, not Kairi! And because I am strong! I can defeat him, and when I do I’ll take us to a safe place.”
“There is no safe place for us.” Kairi’s mother decided. “There never has been. We’ve been ridiculed, driven into hiding, betrayed by Konoha, and now our own.”
“Then I’ll make a safe place!” Naruto told her. “I promise you, on Kairi’s name, I will defeat Seto and protect everyone! Trust me!”
A moment of silence passed. Naruto turned to Mako, the oldest under Seto, and urged him silently to give his consent.
He sighed, bowing his head. “Say we agree. What then? Once you go off to fight Seto, what do we do? Sit here and wait? I admit I would like to entrust this to you, but we have other children here who are still alive—”
“Take them then.” Naruto suggested. “Go to the ruins and wait there until I come to get you. I promise I’ll take you to a safe place after that.”
Everyone started to panic.
“The ruins?”
“Our homeland…”
“What if the enemy is still lying in wait there?”
“There’s no way they’re still there.”
“But we need to restock supplies anyway…”
“But he’s a half-blood!”
Mako raised his hand to silence them all, and nodded to Naruto.
“Alright, you may go.” He replied. “Go and defeat our enemy. Then return to us…”
Naruto stared Seto down. He’d guessed right. After believing he’d killed Naruto, who was standing in his quest for dominance over a ninja nation, he would come to this place to kill Amegakure’s leader and take control of the village.
“Hmm. You’re annoying.” Seto tilted his head back. “You can’t even die properly. How did you survive the poison?”
“You overestimate yourself.” Uri stated. “Rather than killing Naruto, you killed Kairi, who sacrificed herself to save him.”
Seto mulled this over. “I did? She was quite the prodigy, to be able to pull one over on me. And why are you looking at me like that, Naruto?”
If he had been this angry before, Naruto had no clue. But regardless, he was mad enough that he could picture himself ripping Seto apart piece by piece.
“Please, a child is a child.” He brushed his bangs back. “You shouldn’t be so angry.”
“She was one of us…” Naruto argued.
“She was too gentle to be a warrior anyway.” He countered. “If she wanted to save you, she could have told the others and planned a mutiny.”
That would have led to civil war, which was something that had to be prevented. It was the reason Naruto had come up with this.
His legs pulsed, and Seto went flying out the window. Naruto jumped out the window after him, intent on unleashing all his memories on Seto.
*In japanese, Kairi means sea/ocean village. In french it means song/melody. Hence the poetic title. I thought calling it Kairi would give too much away.
