Chapter five: Histories
“Welcome.”
Tsubasa bowed politely, her long purple hair touching the floor. The men from Konoha appeared to be quite handsome. The older ones included.
“I wasn’t expecting such a large group.” She shook hands with the apparent captain, who wore a face mask. “Is this the norm?”
“No not really.” The captain laughed. “I’m Kakashi Hatake. We actually have two teams here; Neji Hyuga is the second captain.”
The young man with white eyes and long, brown hair bowed.
Tsubasa noticed one of the girls. “You two look alike. Are you twins?”
“We are cousins. I am Hinata Hyuga, milady.” She bowed, with the others following her example.
“I am Sakura Haruno.”
“Ino Yamanaka!”
“Kiba Inuzuka.” He placed his hand on his dog. “This is Akamaru!”
“Karin.”
Tsubasa looked at the last one, who did not bow nor introduce himself.
“Welcome, Uchiha Sasuke-san.” She bowed once more.
He looked at her without turning his head. “… Hello.”
Tsubasa dismissed her retainers and led them inside the tower. The group’s eyes scaled the walls in wonder.
“You have very strange architecture here.” Sakura said. “And all these towers…”
“Your clothes are weird too!” Kiba pointed out.
“Kiba!” Ino scolded. “Don’t be rude!”
“What did I do?”
Tsubasa giggled. “It is alright, Yamanaka-san. I’m actually a water priestess. However, I learned ninjutsu from Lady Angel and Lord Pain. That is why my twin sister handles most of my former responsibilities.”
“Is it okay for priestesses to learn ninjutsu?”
“Not really. This way, please.” She stepped into a large elevator, closing the doors once everyone was inside and hitting the button for the top floor.
Sakura looked out the window as they ascended.
“You really do have strange architecture.” She repeated. “Some of these towers look like—”
“Faces!” Kiba shuddered. “They’re giving me the creeps.”
Ino hit him. “I told you, don’t be rude.”
“Our towers are an emergency refuge from the frequent floods.” Tsubasa explained. “They also divert lightning away from some of the more valuable buildings. The faces are from legends.”
“Legends?” Uchiha asked.
Tsubasa smirked. So he wasn’t as bored as he pretended.
“Yes.” She nodded. “Their used to be some ruins here, with murals on every wall. The faces were quite frightening, but the stories that they told were fascinating. A great monster that attacked the land and the ninja that stopped him.”
“You mean the juubi and Rikudo sennin?” Kakashi asked.
“We believe so.” Tsubasa stepped out after the doors opened, entering her bedroom and office.
“Where are these ruins now?” Sakura asked, interested.
“When Amegakure was built, the current leader decided they didn’t have the space to keep them here.” Tsubasa sighed. “He hired the Uzumaki clan to seal them away somewhere.”
“Uzumaki?” Karin asked. “Can you tell us about them? Like what they did and who they were? What happened to them anyway?”
Tsubasa stared, shocked, at the girl. Her hair color… Was she a descendant?
“They were an ancient, traditional family.” She began. “They resided in the land of eddies, a small island nation off the coast of the will of fire, where they were the most powerful force. They specialized in fuinjutsu and medicine, and because they lived such long lives, the land of eddies was nicknamed ‘The land of longevity.’ They were usually hired to seal away minor demons or secret scrolls. During the era of Great War, they foughtas allies of the Senju, their distant blood relatives. However they were very pigheaded and savage, and enjoyed the fighting. Their main source of entertainment was the Senju themselves, along with the Uchiha, Hyuga, and other powerful clans.”
“Is fuinjutu really so formidable?” Hinata asked.
“The Uzumaki were said to be able to seal anything.” Tsubasa replied. “That meant time, energy, and strength amongst other things.”
“If they were so powerful, how’d they get wiped out?” Uchiha asked, earning a glare from Sakura.
“No one really knows.” Tsubasa shook her head. “The land of eddies is not an easy place to invade. On all sides it is surrounded by high precipices and whirlpools. Even if you got past that, twenty kilometers of deadly poisonous flora and fauna, not to mention gigantic man eating beasts, await you. And then you would need to have the chakra, and the stamina, to take on one of the ki yonnin shi.”
“’Ki yonnin shi?’” Kiba repeated.
“’The key four ninja clans.’” Tsubasa was solemn and serious. “That is what the four most powerful clans were called during the era of warring states. The Uchiha, the Hyuga, the Senju, and the Uzumaki. To completely wipe out even one, you would need great strength, and a cold heart.”
Sasuke was silent, but Sakura reached over and squeezed his hand.
“What did you mean when you said they were traditional?” Neji asked.
Tsubasa squared her shoulders. “They were very strict about maintaining the purity of their blood, and forbade outer-clan marriage. Anyone born from one Uzumaki parent and one outsider was called a half-blood, and killed immediately.
“It is probably a good thing that Naruto Uzumaki grew up in your village.” She finished. “His own kind would not have spared him.”
Everyone was quiet for a moment, until Sakura Haruno spoke up.
“Actually, we wanted to ask you about—”
BAM!
The floors and walls shook, with the windows exploding into glass shards.
Tsubasa ran to the elevator which popped open once more.
Her eyes widened. “You!”
Seto Uzumaki smiled quietly, calmly, down at her.
“I have missed you, too.”
