NARUTO'S POV [AKANE VILLAGE UNDERGROUND TUNNEL]
IF YOU DONT LIKE kshshhhtch THAN ME?
HE ENJOYS....KKkksshhhhtchtch TORMENTING...--
Naruto gripped the sides of his head as staticky, hallow voices rang in his head. A few of them almost sounded like Sakura, Sasuke, Hinata, and Kiba. Others sounded unintelligible, garbled, and unclear. He couldn't tell them from Adam.
Every time he heard one of the voices, it was like someone was clawing away at the insides of his skull and carving up his muscles with butcher knives. Every step he took through the tunnel hurt.
"Naruto-kun?" Hinata said, reaching up and brushing her fingers through his hair and leaving them there. "Are you sure you don't want to take a break?"
He would have done something, if he knew how to react. In the two days spent traveling to and then investigating Akane Village, Naruto had started to trust Sasuke more, and stayed close to him. Partly because he noticed things Naruto missed. And partly because he wasn't sure what to say or do with Hinata anymore, and was trying to figure her and himself out.
Why would she kiss him if she loved Sasuke's freind? Especially if she believed that person wasn't far away.
There was an idea forming in his head, as the voices continued to whisper and the headaches got worse and worse. He had had headaches like this before. They started to plague him not long after he woke up, and continued making every waking minute Hell for a good week and a half. Then Uri did something, though he didn't remember what, and they just... Stopped.
Now they were back with a vengeance... With wierd voices in his head. He ached all over.
"I think we're nearing the end." Sakura said, noticing some light at the end of the path. A door shaped line on the back wall.
"Is that what the old man was talking about?" Kiba asked. He had it easy, riding on Akamaru's back. The others had been walking for half an hour. Akamaru seemed to be used to it, too, not even breaking a sweat or lacking breath.
Naruto would be just as steady, if not for the stupid voices.
"Probably." Sasuke answered.
FLASHBACK STARTS HERE
Akane village was beautiful and prosperous, just as Naruto had heard from Uri who used to listen to the stories of senior ninja when he was little. Fall came early, and stayed late so during most of winter and spring falling leaves filled the water and air. Not too hot nor too cold, and you could see the mountains surrounding Uzushiogakure from here.
But Mami was nowhere near the kimonos. They were being sold in different areas all over the village, but they hadn't seen her anywhere.
So Sasuke and Naruto had begun interviewing villagers.
"A red haired woman you say?" The one geezer in the village who wasn't selling festival food or fireworks or kimonos asked. "I used to see one all the time. Two of them actually."
Naruto turned his head a little too fast and felt the throbbing turn into a blast of pain within his skull. He nearly blacked out, but Sasuke kept the questions going.
"How long ago was this?" He asked.
"Actually, I believe it was barely a year ago." The geezer answered as he accepted one of the Akito flowers being handed out by children. "These two red haired beauties would appear in my shop once every week. I always thought it was odd, since I never saw them during the day. And it was the same hour every visit. Nine pm."
"What did they buy?"
"Buy?" The geezer looked confused. "They never bought anything. They asked a lot of questions about foreigners, outsiders. They asked me if I had seen anymore red head youngsters like them. I told them I saw some red hair every once in a while, but not quite the same shade as theirs. I may not look it but I have the best eye for things in the whole village."
Sasuke looked like he would rather have nails hammered into his skull than listen to the geezer's bragging. Naruto thought it was hokey. Old men didn't see anything well. Why were they still talking to this guy?
"But then, I noticed they stopped coming." He continued. "A few weeks went by, and a young man came around asking about his mother and aunt. He looked like them, with all that spiky red hair."
Naruto's eyes widened. Spiky red hair?
"I told him what I knew, but in the middle of our conversation he panicked. He told me to go inside, turn the lights out, and hide until morning. It was freezing out, and I begged him to come in. But he just shoved me in, slammed the door, and ran off. I never saw him or those two girls again."
"Do you know where they lived?" Naruto asked, certain of it now.
"Well, I don't have any proof, but they could have been living in the cavern tunnels just outside the village, to the north." He pointed to the forest. "Everyone who goes there always comes back screaming, too afraid to speak. A child wandered in there once. She hasn't been the same since."
Naruto looked in the direction the geezer had pointed.
"Thanks." He said, and walked off.
"What is it?" Sasuke asked as he walked beside him.
"I think this is where Tsuna came from." Naruto told him, his head returning to its spasms of pain. The voices would get louder, then quiet down, and scream, in an odd pattern.
"I forgot, but he used to tell me that his parents had disappeared, and he was just assuming they'd been murdered because that was what everyone in our family said. That Uzumaki who disappear are either mutilated or worked to death."
"We're searching for MAMI." Sasuke reminded him.
"I know! I'm saying she could be behind their disappearances." Naruto said. "Hiding in the caves. No, actually she wouldn't just be hiding. She'd be plotting something. Let's go find the others and hit the caves. We'll find something there."
FLASHBACK ENDS HERE
"Naruto?" Hinata said. "You feel really warm."
He FELT like ramen that had been over boiled into burning hot mush. It was definitely getting worse.
The others stared at him, concerned.
"Maybe I should treat you." Sakura suggested.
Naruto knit his brow and laced his fingers through Hinata's before pulling her hand away from his skull.
"I'm fine." He promised, then flinched.
"Naruto-kun--!" Hinata yelled before he clapped a hand over her mouth and shook his head at everyone, warning them to be quiet.
He could hear something. Some scratchy sound, like multiple nails clawing at the walls and floor.
He remembered a little late.
"Run." He said, the hairs on the back of his neck stood up.
"Huh?" Sakura and Kiba asked in unison.
He tightened his grip on Hinata's hand and forged ahead at top speed, pushing the others forward.
"RUN!"
Behind them, a slicing sound ripped through the air like a tornado, and the walls were sliced open before collapsing in on themselves.
"Oh no!" Sakura yelled as she lagged behind everyone. "The exit!"
"Just keep running!" Kiba ordered as Sasuke took her hand to help her keep up.
Red light filled the tunnel, and Naruto knew things were gonna go bad.
Uri had explained about the guardians before. The hatred they had for anyone with even an ounce of outsider blood.
He squeezed his eyes shut.
But... These guys weren't...
NARUTO, Uri had said, DO OUR FAMILY A FAVOR. THIS TIME, PROTECT ONLY YOU. LET OTHERS FEND FOR THEMSELVES. WE CAN'T AFFORD TO LOSE ANY MORE CLAN MEMBERS.
His eyes snapped open.
"As if I could do that!" He shouted, turning on his heel and releasing Hinata so she fell backward, away from the guardian.
Naruto didn't have time to think about it. He summoned all nine of his tails, making them sharper than ever.
Then there was ONE thought in his head:
THEY'RE GOING TO KILL ME.
