I am sick! I might have strep throat. But I made time to write this anyway. Ugh, the pain...!
Chapter 10: reunion
Naruto gasped as he came back to earth.
He took back his seal stone and fell to his knees, crying.
"The previous elder... My ma and pa are... You and Uri..." He talked frantically inbetween gasps, desperate for air.
"Liars..." Seto was leaning against the wall, looking hopeless and haunted and angry. "All of you are liars. Father,
Minato, you!" He pointed his long sword at Naruto, who was still reeling from everything he'd learned. "Liars! You all...
You stole everything from me! You... TOOK KUSHINA AWAY FROM ME!"
He raised his sword but Naruto swatted it away with one of his tails.
"Seto!" He ran and grabbed his shirt, shaking him. "Let's go back! To our family! To the others! I'll explain everything! Kairi was just an accident! You didn't mean to--"
"Yes I did." He growled, shoving Naruto away. "My original aim as you, but Kairi is just as satisfying."
Naruto's face fell. "You don't mean that..."
"I do." Seto dried his eyes and was back to glaring. "Now you understand what it felt like to lose her. Kushina died, on top of all the others. YOU SENT ME TO HELL WITH YOU'RE BIRTH! You murdered your own mother!"
Naruto grit his teeth. "No I didn't!"
"How would you know?!" Seto pointed. "Even if you didn't have amnesia, you still wouldn't remember!"
Naruto laid his fist over his heart. "I can feel it! I know it’s true! I didn't kill ma or pa! It wasn't my fault! NOW QUIT LOOKING AT ME THAT WAY!"
Seto reached for a kunai.
"I'll never see them again." He whispered. "It's hopeless. Kushina is lost to me... Even death will not let me see her again..."
Naruto softened. "You don't know that. That's not for you to decide..."
"I just wanted to apologize." He smiled weakly. "I couldn't keep any of my promises. I should have torn her away from that man when I had the chance. I should have killed you, before she could have you. That would have saved her..."
"But she was happy!" Naruto argued. "Why can't you just accept that and move on?! You still have everyone else waiting for you. I'm still here!"
Seto laughed. "You? You are irrelevant. You just rub dirt in my wounds. You are just like Kushina, and yet you're not her. Just a pale imitation... Something sent down from the heavens to torture me."
"Don't put me on such a pedestal!" Naruto took another step forward and fell to his knees. The curses transference was starting to take its toll on him. "I was born because they wanted me here! I'm sure of that too! And Kaa-chan loved you always! She never blamed you! And being separated from To-chan would have been worse than death! Are you listening to me? None of it is your fault!"
He asked. "…Have you forgotten about Kairi?"
Naruto shook his head. "I'm saying I forgive you! Now let's go home!"
Seto paused, and then burst out laughing.
"You... Forgive me?" He asked. "You forgive me for Kairi! For something you challenged me over? Hilarious..."
Naruto laughed too, but stopped suddenly.
Seto's sword had come back.
And it was sticking out of his chest.
"I've had enough of your bromance." Mami said, ripping the sword out of Seto's chest and sealing him into her own seal stone.
"MAMI!" Naruto was furious, but when he tried to get up, he fell forward. His whole body felt like lead-filled taffy.
Then a different, more intense pain hit him.
He started to writhe around, hugging himself and screaming.
"Hurts, huh?" Mami leaned against the sword. "Not surprising. That trick of yours is different from the transformation jutsu. Your body actually expands. And you haven't had the chance to practice it repeatedly, so you suffer terrible muscle strain."
Naruto screamed in agony, dazed and drooling. His brain was fried...
And everything hurt.
"Seto was right about one thing," she gripped the hilt with both hands over Naruto's head, "You are more trouble than you're worth."
He wrapped two tails around the blade to stop it from piercing his skull. The others had dissipated and the two left had nearly lost their razor sharp edge.
He squeezed his eyes shut, groaning.
"Sorry, Kurama. You're getting cut too..."
"Don't worry about that right now!" He ordered. "Focus!"
Something happened. Mami was knocked aside by a pink haired girl, and somehow Naruto ended up at a safe distance away from her, with one of his arms thrown over some weirdo's shoulder.
Tsuna, Uri, Yuuki and several others were pushing her back. It was attack, attack, attack and no defense. And it was working. She was retreating.
He started seeing things. Mixed mental images and fuzzy memories, all blended together. Messy, blurry pictures and sounds that made his head split open and his heart explode.
He gasped and sat bolt upright in bed.
He breathed heavily, his eyes wide and panicky as he wiped the swept out of his hair, off his neck and forehead.
The room was pure white, including the bed sheets and furniture. There was a rod, but the curtain wasn’t pulled around him.
His heart obviously hadn’t explode, because if it had he wouldn't have felt achy all over on the outside and squishy like a marshmallow on the inside.
"Kurama..." He hugged himself for the pain. "What happened?"
“Things get harder to see when you’re sleeping, you know that.” He growled. “But I’m fairly positive they’ve taken us out of Ame.”
He moved to get out of bed and felt his insides reverberate, feeling like ashes, raw meat, and dry ice.
“You should have let someone else take care of Seto.” Kurama chastised.
Naruto forgot the physical pain and gripped his bedsheets.
“Someone else DID.” He muttered, guilty.
“What are you going to do about Mami?”
Naruto shook his head. “I need to talk to Uri first. He needs to know what I saw…”
He tried to get up again, enduring the pain with one-arm hugging his ribs, but was stopped by an outside force.
One wrist was chained to the wall by a shackle.
It was long enough that he could stand but not move far enough away from the bed to peek through the wall with the seer-ripple seal. When he tried yanking on it, he felt a slight tingling sensation run through his body.
“What is that?” Kurama asked. “It’s annoying. It’s making my hair stand on end.”
Naruto kept tugging, determined to break free.
“I think it’s…restraint jutsu with lightning nature. From the looks of the base, they really don’t want me running off. Have any idea who brought me here?”
“It was the one that got you away from Mami.” Kurama answered, sounding nervous. “The one with the headband pulled over his eye.”
Naruto yanked with more force, and felt the tingling sensation turn into a bolt of lightning, with his hands smoking. He let go immediately and looked at them.
“They’re completely red…” He bit his cheek and pressed them against the wall, sealing their “time” there. Two handprints were left, with some color having been drained away, and fresh cracks spitting dust.
He brushed them against his shirt, which made him notice were the same color as the room.
“Where am I?”
“Konohagakure.”
He looked over his shoulder. A tall man in a trench coat and a headwrap-style headband and some face scars was entering the room.
“Who are… you?” Naruto asked, squinting. His face suddenly felt very hot, like it was melting off, and there was a deep weighted pain between his eyes.
Scarface’s eyes shuddered for such a brief moment that Naruto immediately knew this guy was talented at hiding his emotions. It also made him wonder what he was thinking.
He shut the door.
“My name is Ibiki Morino.” He answered. “I need to ask you some questions.”
