So this is how I see it. A ritual seal is drawn on the ground. 2 characters stand on either ends of the pattern and a sacrifice is placed in the middle. When the jutsu is activated, the souls of the 2 fusing characters leave their bodies and combine within the sacrifice, who is then overtaken by dust like an edo tensei except the dust forms into a combination of both characters souls, creating a fusion of both characters in edo tensei form. When the jutsu is undone, the souls return to their original bodies and the edo dissolves leaving the corpse of the sacrifice.
This jutsu requires a lot of chakra, and thus can only be preformed by a group of powerful shinobi. After casting, anyone of the participants can undo the jutsu at any time. While active, their chakra will continually be siphoned from their bodies towards the fused character. If any of them run out of chakra or are incapacitated, the jutsu will be undone.
The fusion can also adopt abilities from the sacrifice. For example, if Naruto and Sasuke fused using Rock Lee as a sacrifice, the fusion would now have Sasuke's dojutsu, Naruto's SOSP mode, as well as access to the 8 gates. Because the fusion is an immortal edo, it can use the 8 gate of death without penalty, combining it with SOSP mode for a firey red cloak as well as Sasuke's rinnegan and mangekyo. The ultimate warrior is born!
