"If" logic can be a tricky thing my friend. At first glance your premise seems correct "If naruto didn't have the kyuubi he would have died on multiple occasions". However, there are underlying variables that you fail to consider.
For instance would his fighting style change if he didn't have the kyuubi. He knows he heals quickly, so he can afford to dive head-first into a fight. This accelerated healing comes from the Kyuubi; thus, would he rush into a fight if he realized he wouldn't heal as easy?
Also, he uses multi-shadow clones quite often. If he didn't have the kyuubi's chakra, he probably would not use them so often. This would change the way most of his battles played out.
Finally, if he didn't have the Kyuubi, he would not have been the village pariah. This may allowed him to develop into more of a model student. He could have learned a variety of jutsu and been an absolute tactical genius
See how I can easily use "If" logic to counter your "If" logic. All in all, there are just too many unknown variables to make this kind of statement.
