I think it is more accurate to say that Kishi copied Togashi (Authot of HxH and Yu Yu Hakusho) rather than to say he copied HxH in particular. In fact, there are more things copied from Yu Yu Hakusho than there are in HxH. The following are things copied from Yu Yu Kakusho

1) Dragon of the Darkness Flame = Amateresu
2) Kurama (fox spirit/demon) = Kurama (fox spirit/demon)
3) Kurama's power over trees and plants = Hashirama's Mokuton
4) Psychic Scalpel = Chakra Scalpel
5)Kurama controls plants/trees = Mokuton controls Kurama
