Were all those deaths really necessary? I'm sure the story could flow just fine with most unneeded deaths not happening

Of course not, at least not on a large scale like the series. But because of plot development, it is exagerrated, especially since it's a fictional story.

Every death might not weigh the same, but the main ones are important.

Asuma's death showed us that the in the Shinobi World, anyone can die. It also gave Shikamaru the drive needed to take down Hidan, to take down an Akatsuki.
