It was never in play, the transmigrant crap was mentioned all the way back in the kage summit arc. Anyone who thought it was in play was just trying to make Sasuke irrelevant to the story.

The entire story has had the underlying theme of duality that started and ended with Naruto AND Sasuke - as rivals, but at the same time, "brothers."
