Like Itachi did, basically following in his brother's footsteps. Ok, ok, I have been firmly committed to the idea that suckske would die in the final battle, but your idea also makes sense in terms of continuity with the past while allowing Kishimoto to further develop/mature the story. +rep

Somehow I get the idea that Sasuke would fake his own death in order for Naruto to move on. Dunno, maybe I've got a bad judge of character, but I think it's what Sasuke would do in order to ensure Naruto leads the village in confidence. (Besides, it would still give a chance of Naruto vs Sasuke at the end Lol)

Either way, I like this idea of Sasuke protecting the village from the shadows and becoming Batman. It's fitting
