Chernobyl's radiation also had an impact on the microbial environment. Decomposers such as fungi, bacteria, and some types of insects are extremely sensitive; as a result, nutrients/organic material do not get recycled into the environment and the bio-matter does not decompose.

TL;DR- Radiation inhibits the growth of trees. The forest would be a lot more lively if Chernobyl didn't happen.
