hmm... nice theory. But there were a lot of mask utilized for the sealing of a death reaper. Maybe there was only one death reaper and the masks represents the vessel of the captured souls.

But I think, they were unaffected because being EDO is already under a jutsu. Hence, the rule, you cannot put an EDO into a genjutsu (except KA Shisui)
