They definitely exist. I do remember Shikamaru using them to create a shadow as the final part of his plan against the Demons (Tayuya) and possibly by Kakashi against the deva path (not sure on this one). /toolazytogetpanels

Well then a flash bomb obliterates the shadows even for a short period of time and ends the possession.

The only thing is it would require another shinobi to use, and multiple shadow possession is possible so the person coming to aid would have to tread with care.

No. This logic is based on the anime translation of the explanation of Shikamaru's abilities during Temari's fight, when it said that he can use shadows other than his own to add to the total surface area that he can manipulate. This is not true according to the manga. This page explains it all:

Shikamaru's shadow is the ONLY shadow he can use to capture people. This surface area can only be increased by the sun setting and make it longer, not by attaching to other shadows. At best, the forest can extend the range of his little thread so that he can basically chase you with it almost forever.
