How strond do you think, say, Shikimaru would be if he had a tailed beast for juice?
Shadow possession jutsu is actually pretty formidable, and it's greatest limitation is Chakra. I get the impression the technique itself is only moderately taxing, but Nara clan members have low chakra reserves.
Imagine shadow possession spammed to the same level as Naruto's clone jutsu. It could be unbelievably powerful. It's impossible to guard against except by using brute force, and it's major drawback is the chakra problem, which the tailed beast fixes.
