Nami is a young, normal-sized and skinny girl with long orange hair. She has a blue tattoo on her left shoulder. Nami wears a variety of clothes in the series but her longest lasting outfit is a white and blue striped shirt, an orange mini-skirt and orange high-heeled boots. Nami wears high heels, sandals, or boots, but her height and posture are not usually affected by the height of her heels. Nami doesn't walk like a regular person in heels, instead she runs while wearing them. Her fashion sense frequently changes as does her hair style. On her left arm she wears the a circular watch what she calls a Log Pose since it also contains a compass and a yellow bracelet given to her by her sister.
Personality:
Nami is supposedly the second smartest of her family, the other being her mother who was killed. Nami despised all Ninjas. She viewed them as nothing but bad people after losing her mother. Nami is greedy and will do anything for money, accepting any challenge that comes along. Her love of money stems from her childhood, where she lived a poor life and was often upset at having little wealth despite the love of her adopted mother. The one thing she will not do is sell out a comrade; no matter what the sum. She is loyal to her money, but no matter how much she denies it, her loyalty to her comrades comes first. Nami is very bossy and is usually ordering everyone around her. She is a coward but her cowardice has more to do with survival. She is aware of dangers she face during missions and has a much better understanding of the ninja world and its more dangerous individuals such as the Akatsuki. She can be devilish at times and won't think twice about ditching the others to save her own life but she will always think about it and change what she had planned to do. She is willing to forgive even people who have hurt her in the past if there happens to be a deeper meaning for their actions. She cries easily and she shows much understanding of and insight into feelings. This often makes her good to comfort her friends.

Nami is an orphan found by Bell-mère, a female Ninja, on a hostile battlefield. The marine adopted her along with Nojiko, another child with her, and the three became as close as a real family. As a child, Nami developed a love for learning the World’s history, and the dream to find out how the ninja system had come into place. However, Bell-mère's tangerine trees provided only meager means of support and they were unable afford anything other than the bare necessities. As a result, Nami could not afford the history books, leading her to often steal them from the village bookshop. One day, Bell-mère scolded Nami when she got caught stealing; however, she applauded Nami for trying her best to learn more.
In one year, in which the price of tangerines fell due to a large supply, Bell-mère had to eat only tangerines and give most of the food to Nami and Nojiko, but did not let on how bad the situation was to Nojiko and Nami. One day, Nami was given one of Nojiko's dresses by Bell-mère and Nami was offended. Nami wanted her own clothes not Nojiko's hand-me-downs. During the argument, Nami said she did not consider Nojiko a real sister, causing Bell-mère to slap her. Nami then ran off, saying that she wished she were adopted by rich people. Bell-mère is greatly touched, and she decided to spare some money and prepare Nami's favorite meal even though it would break her budget. She sent Nojiko to fetch Nami while she prepared the meal. Just at this time, the infamous ninja, Arlong intruded the house asking where Bell-mère was. Since Bell-mère had to loan from him and could not pay for her entire family's monthly fee for living, she brutally murdered in front of Nami and Nojiko. Nami was then kidnapped out of Konoha and forced to become a ninja for Arlong after he noticed her knowledge and skill as a Ninja. However, Arlong struck a deal with Nami telling her that she can buy her freedom from him and will not come near them again if she pays him 100,000,000 Ryo. This encourages Nami to work hard, earn the money and become free and out of Arlong’s grasp.
One day, Nami overhears Arlong and his henchmen talking about getting rid of the money she had saved up to make her work for him even longer. Nami was outraged and decided to kill Arlong herself. After succeeding with the assassination of Arlong, Nami returned to Konoha vowing to herself to become strong enough to protect those around her.
