Because outside books and comics...it's actually pretty unlikely! I've noticed with anime, film and TV that the more likeable and interesting characters usually aren't the titular role.

Before he became OP with God Powers, who was honestly following Naruto Uzumaki as their fav back in 2010? The side cast are immensely more interesting in Naruto and many of my favourite series. So I thought it'd be cool to count how many loved MCs there are out there.

I will say that it's not that hero's are unlikable but that a sizable number of vocal young adults like to chase angst or bad boy characters while heroes seem bland, cliche and being goody two shoes. You know they are going to win in the end because usually they are there for the purpose of promoting the idealism and give some sort of a nod to cultural values. Especially in long running light series. In short series hero's development is faster as they have to end their journey sooner. In longer series they take it too slow. Side characters may need that extra 'zing' to be remembered themselves as well as make story interesting as we are watching much slower journey of the main.

The most unlikable heroes -I have found in Anurag Kashyap's movies. They are on netflix but after watching a movie from him you may need some Disney movie to get over it.

Liable heroes? Plenty.

Hobbit - Bilbo not really my fav character but I like him alot
Star Wars Prequels - Obi Wan Kenobi

Series:
GOT - Jon Snow is cool not really my fav character but I like him alot

I agree. It is rare. I'm sure I have more, but here are the ones that are coming to me first. Some are in a big man cast, so I'll try to keep those minimum.

Death Note (Light)
Gravity Falls (Twins)
TMNT 2012 (Leo)
Being Human (Aidan)
Bates Motel (Norman)
Constantine (Constantine)
Zootopia (Nick/Judy)
Jyn Erso (Rogue One)
