Madara sits next to Nagato. "You are the third Rikudō... [Holding] a power so strong, it was even able to turn your red hair, proof of your Uzumaki clan lineage, into white...
You turned traitor and yet you still smile...?"

Even if Nagato was of the Uzumaki clan there are still many questions to be answered for example.
1)Why was Nagato chosen to hold the Rinnengan by Madara
2)Was he chosen coz of the Uzumaki Bloodline that is yet to be revealed.

Madara obviously needs the Rinnegan powers to either control or summon the Jubi and complete his Moon Eyes Plan.
Nagato was probably chosen because:

a) Uzamaki clan members are said to live longer and also withstand more damage as proven by Kushina when the Kyuubi was ripped out of her and she was still alive.

b) Uzamaki members are said to have the best Summoning techniques which was probably the main reason Nagato was neccesary i.e. to summon the Jubi.

c) Madara needs someone ELSE to seal the Jubi to him and make him its jinchuuriki

Uzumaki does mean swirl in japanese, or at least thats what I've heard. as in the swirl in the rinengan. perhaps we'll see naruto use em futher down and maybe uzumaki clan are the decendents of the sage of six paths.who knows I just hope naruto really lets loose and ripps this guy a new one.

it means that nagato had the sages body AND eyes. Sages body being the long lifespans and ability to withstand greater damage than the average person that the uzumaki have.

I believe that the uzumaki have the sages body, and Kushina living with the fox ripped out, the first hokages wife still alive when kushina was young, narutos looking like the rikkudo sennin are all evidence of this.

I dont think madara was lying when he said he gave nagato his eyes. It means that the Uzumaki dont naturally have rinnegan. The second rikkudo must be the person who madara took his eyes from, making nagato the third.

Maybe Madara gave Nagato the Rinnegan in hopes that his Uzumaki blood would be able to control its power? He mentions how it causes his red hair to turn white, so maybe possessing the rinnegan takes a huge toll on the person so they need strong blood to withstand it. And maybe the Uzumaki blood alone wasn't strong enough.
