He got one-shotted by Ama when nobody was distracting him. He also wasn't being distracted when he got sealed. Itachi surprised him.

He died three times to Itachi. First he got killed by Ama, then got his arms and legs chopped off, and then sealed in the end by the Sakegari.

Pretty much. Itachi defeated his summonings, Rinnegan link, CT, and blitzed him multiple times throughout the fight. Naruto and Bee were about to die if it wasn't for Itachi. He had to save them constantly and they contributed almost nothing to Nagato's defeat.
