How? The only hope he has is Preta Path. But even that can't absorb shockwaves.

Those shockwaves have to actually hit Nagato, which they don't for the following reason:

1). The blades move linear so they can be read and dodged like Hashirama and Kaguya did. Madara couldn't kill a defense-less Hashirama with a direct slash. Sasuke couldn't kill Sin with a direct slash.

2). The slash force only cuts the tip of a mountain and that can be repelled by a proportional force of ST; since the blade is repelled, the blade hits PS instead.

Rather you have to elaborate how PS deals with Preta Path feeding on it or black rods disturbing its flow of Chakra, but that can't be countered either way.

Itachi's performance would benefit from this location if he can escape into the forest, but Chibaku Tensei was proven to be too much for Itachi to handle, so Nagato was clearly portrayed to be the better fighter.

To be fair Itachi hand no clue what CT was nor did he know how it worked. Also if Totsuka does come in contact with the core it definitely reaches it.

give me some of that blunt bruh canon made it clear that Itachi needs help from two powerful jins to deal with CT. There is no way in hell that he is soloing Nagato. not knocking down Itachi but this is Nagato we are talking about.
OP: Itachi takes down anything Nagato has with PS bar preta path.
