Nagato is a fair-skinned young man with chin-length signature red Uzumaki hair. As a child, his hair would regularly hang off his face blocking direct view of his eyes; only until his adult years would his hair shift to only cover the right side of his face. As an adult Nagato grew to be of average height standing at 5"7'. His most noticeable trait are his eyes themselves bearing the legendary eyes of the Rikudō Sennin - the Rinnegan of Madara Uchiha which he was given unknowingly by the very same when he was very young.

As a boy Nagato was sensitive, kind, and very often prone to crying. He constantly felt unsure and insecure about his place in the world around him leading him to frequently resort to self-doubt. His self-doubt led him to feel unsure of how to protect those around him – namely his closest and only friends Yahiko and Konan. This can be attributed to the tragedies suffered in his early life when Konohagakure Shinobi had killed his parents during the Second Great Shinobi World War. Despite this he was always afraid of hurting others even if it was to protect Yahiko and Konan.

After losing Yahiko at the hands of Hanzo, Nagato's disposition drastically shifted from his once kind heart to a highly aloof, stoic, and very serious one. The loss of Yahiko and all of his other previous tragedies combined with the words of Obito Uchiha under the guise of Madara led Nagato to believe himself as a god of peace. He believed that through his pain and suffering that he evolved into a deity and reached a new level of maturity. This also led him to believe that the world was capable of the same evolution and to achieve that he must show the world similar pain to what he experienced in order for it to achieve this evolution. His resolute feelings led him to never regret his actions no matter the cost of lives and always believed the work he was doing was aimed to achieve peace in the world. Despite his seemingly cold and distant behavior Nagato still deeply cared for his allies even going so far as to reprimand Kisame for mocking Hidan and Kakuzu by calling them the 'Zombie Combo' after their defeat and subsequent death and incapacitation.

Mastery of the Elemental Chakra Natures

Even as a child Nagato came to master all five basic elemental nature transformations due to his Rinnegan. This was something completely unprecedented at the time according to Jiraiya. Because of his mastery Nagato is capable of using all basic elemental nature transformations with increased speed but with the normal number of required hand seals.

Shuton | Alcohol Release

As he matured and grew Nagato came to learn of his own advanced nature transformation. By combining the elements of Water, Earth, and Fire Nagato became able to harness Alcohol Release, otherwise known as Shuton. This combination creates a powerful Kekkei Tōta. Alcohol Release revolves primarily around the intoxicating traits the substance causing opponents to make simple mistakes in their techniques and hinder their ability to mold chakra and perform at their peak in battle. Alcohol Release offers many supplementary benefits in battle as well and a few pseudo medical applications to better Nagato's survivability.

Taijutsu & Graceful Fist

Under the guidance of Jiraiya and the experience he gained over the years he spent fighting Nagato became a taijutsu specialist with greater speed and strength than an average ninja. Nagato also specializes in Graceful Fist making his movements naturally more fluid than other strong fist users. His knowledge of the style has taught him the anatomy of the human body giving him insight on key muscles and pressure points which he targets with this style.

Nagato lived with his parents: Fusō and Ise on the outskirts of Amegakure. When he was very young, Madara Uchiha secretly transplanted his Rinnegan into Nagato without his or his parents' knowledge. Sometime later, during the Second Shinobi World War, Nagato and his parents took shelter in their home to avoid the fighting going on around them. One day, two Konoha shinobi broke into their home looking for food and Nagato and his parents tried to sneak out unnoticed. When they were discovered, his parents attacked the shinobi so that Nagato could escape. The Konoha ninja killed his parents in self-defence and, upon realising they were only civilians, tried apologising to Nagato. Overcome with grief, Nagato used Madara's Rinnegan for the first time to kill them and avenge his parents.

After burying his parents, Nagato, now an orphan, was forced to leave home and begin wandering in search of food and shelter. With resources scare due to the ongoing war, no one he met would help him until Nagato, who had collapsed from hunger, was found by Konan and Yahiko, orphans like himself. They banded together, acquired food to survive through any means, and shared dreams of a future where they were in charge and could use their power to eliminate war. Yahiko was particularly passionate about this point, which inspired Nagato to adopt the same goal. In order to accomplish this, the three would need to become ninja. With few options to choose from, they approached Konoha's Legendary Sannin and asked to be taught ninjutsu. Orochimaru offered to kill them in order to end their suffering, but Jiraiya, guilty over his participation in the war, offered to teach them how to look out for themselves.

Jiraiya found a place for them to live and taught them how to fish, but he would not teach them ninjutsu. While the orphans were out one day, they were found and assaulted by an Iwagakure chūnin. Fearing for his friends' lives, Nagato used his Rinnegan to kill the Iwa-nin. When Jiraiya arrived on the scene to help them, he noticed Nagato's eyes for the first time and was reminded of the legends of the Sage of the Six Paths, the original possessor of the Rinnegan. Because of this, Jiraiya changed his mind and began teaching them ninjutsu. Nagato was remorseful for killing the Iwa-nin, but Jiraiya convinced him that sometimes violence and personal pain was necessary to protect others. In time he even shared his belief that Nagato was the Sage of Six Paths' reincarnation and that, like the original Sage, Nagato would use his Rinnegan to usher in a world of peace.

Jiraiya trained the orphans for three years. Because of his Rinnegan, Nagato easily mastered everything he was taught. Once they were able to defeat one of his shadow clones in a fight, Jiraiya decided they were ready to forge out on their own and he returned to Konoha, confident they would bring reform to the country. The three formed an organisation they called Akatsuki, with Yahiko as its leader, and began advocating an end to war. Their message proved popular and they gathered many followers; even Jiraiya would sometimes hear news of their exploits. During the Third Shinobi World War, they were approached by a disguised Obito Uchiha. Introducing himself as Madara Uchiha, he offered to help them in their pursuits and show Nagato how to unlock the full potential of his Rinnegan. Yahiko refused the offer, suspecting Tobi only meant to use them.

Throughout their quest for peace, Akatsuki's ranks swelled and became known throughout Amegakure, so much so that Hanzō of the Salamander, the village's leader, began to feel Akatsuki threatened his rule. He approached Akatsuki, offering to work together with them to help negotiate with the other warring villages. The next day, at a meeting to finalise the arrangement, Yahiko and Nagato were ambushed by Hanzō and his men, with support from Konoha's Danzō Shimura. Using Konan as a hostage, Hanzō threatened to kill her if Nagato did not kill Yahiko. Unwilling to let Nagato have that on his conscience, Yahiko impaled himself on Nagato's kunai, using his dying breath to state his faith that Nagato would change the world. Enraged by Yahiko's death, Nagato took Konan back from Hanzō, though his legs were badly damaged in the process. He then summoned the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and, upon linking with it, used it to slaughter Hanzō's men, though Hanzō himself escaped. Afterwards, Nagato severed his ties with Amegakure by slashing the village's symbol on his forehead protector, no longer wishing to be affiliated with Hanzō's village.

Yahiko's death ultimately convinced Nagato that his philosophies about achieving peace were foolish; the world would never willingly end the cycle of death and hatred it had operated on for so long. Only through direct experience of war and all the losses and agonies it brought could anyone truly desire peace. Intending to personally bring that level of despair to the world, Nagato took on the name of "Pain".

Rinnegan (輪廻眼, Saṃsāra Eye) → Perhaps his most noticeable trait, Nagato's Rinnegan was implanted unknowingly to him by Madara Uchiha when he was very young. The dojutsu had not been seen by the world since the time of the Sage of the Six Paths. Unlike Obito Uchiha who was seen unable to wield the power of both Rinnegan, Nagato was seen time and time again to be able to greatly control both eyes even in his weakened state. With his Rinnegan Nagato came to master every form of Ninjutsu and came to master all five basic nature transformations. Nagato also was seen being able to track much faster speeds with his Rinnegan up to three times his movement capability allowing him to keep up with faster targets. In addition to this he could also perceive chakra and barrier techniques with great clarity. With his Rinnegan Nagato came to possess the Six Paths Techniques (六道の術, Rikudō no Jutsu). In total there are seven paths that are granted to those who wield the Rinnegan and grant nearly godlike abilities to its user.

Description:
One of the 3 great Doujutsu, the Rinnegan has, like the other, the ability to see chakra and the chakra flow of individuals. It also allows the user a great clarity of perception and tracking abilities, although its levels vary from user to user. Dispicted as the eyes of the SO6P, the Rinnegan awaken on Madara Uchiha after he obtained his EMS and implanted Hashirama's Senju cells in himself. Having both lineage from the SO6P allowed him to awake the Rinnegan. When Madara activates the Rinnegan, he seems to not suffer any kind decrease in his EMS abilities in terms of tracking speed, clarity of perception or seeing chakra. Eventually his eyes were bestowed upon Nagato Uzumaki and in him manifested lower abilities (equal or comparable to MS). While Nagato was never able to deactivate his eyes, Madara could switch at will between his EMS and Rinnegan eyes, although he wasn't able to go from 3 Tomoe to Rinnegan directly. Eventually Obito transplanted Nagato's (and subsequently Madara's) Left Rinnegan into himself. By doing so he gained access to both Doujutsu at the same time although losing the ability to deactivate the Rinnegan and as such, losing chakra constantly to maintain it.

The Deva Path (天道, Tendō) → The Deva Path allows the wielder of the Rinnegan to manipulate both attractive and repulsive forces of gravity. This grants the user access to techniques such as Shinra Tensei and Chibaku Tensei.

The Asura Path (修羅道, Shuradō) → The Asura Path allows the wielder of the Rinnegan to manipulate their own body and grants them mechanized limbs, weaponry, and armor. It also can create additional faces on their head that can all possess the Rinnegan which enhance their field of vision.

The Human Path (人間道, Ningendō) → The Human Path grants the wielder of the Rinnegan the power to remove souls and read a person's mind against their will.

The Animal Path (畜生道, Chikushōdō) → The Animal Path grants the wielder of the Rinnegan the ability to summon a large variety of creatures and animals all of whom can possess the Rinnegan. Unlike regular summoning techniques the Animal Path does not require a blood sacrifice. It simply requires the user to clap their hands together.

The Preta Path (餓鬼道, Gakidō) → The Preta Path grants the wielder of the Rinnegan the great power of being able to absorb all forms of chakra and ninjutsu regardless of nature, size, and shape.

The Naraka Path (地獄道, Jigokudō) → The Naraka Path grants the wielder of the Rinnegan the ability to summon and control the King of Hell granting them access to techniques such as Rinne Tensei which are done through the seventh and final path.

The Outer Path (外道, Gedō) → The Outer Path grants the wielder of the Rinnegan the power that rules over both life and death. This grants the user techniques such as Rinne Tensei which allow the user to bring the dead back to life.

(Tendō) - Deva Path

Description: The user activates the Deva Path which grants him the ability to manipulate attractive and repulsive forces allowing it to repel or attract objects or people, mimicking at some extent gravity. (Shuradō) - Asura Path

Description: The user will activate the Asura Path which grants him the ability to summon mechanised armor, augmenting their body with extra limbs and various robotic weaponry. It allows the user to create up to 4 extra arms which can be used in a variety of ways. Such as grabbing their opponent and using a hidden chakra cannon in on the arms to attack his opponent. He can also alter his ownhead to manifest additional faces with additional pairs of eyes, all linked together. The possibilities are multiple. He can use this activation to access all of the Asura path abilities.

(Ningendō) - Human Path

Description: The user activates the Human Path which grants him the capability of mind reading, amongst other abilities, simply by placing its hand over the target's head, and could extract any information or secret being hidden by the victim against his/her will. However, using the technique will inevitably pull the soul out of the target's body, causing instant death.

(Jigokudō) - Naraka Path

Description: The user activates the Naraka path which grants Nagato the ability to access the interrogation ability of the path but not the regeneration ability. The interrogation ability requires the user to merely grab his target and causing the King of Hell to appear before them. With the victim seemingly paralysed, the King Of Hell will unzip its mouth to release tendril-like arms and would draw out an apparition of the victim's life force energy in the form of an enlarged tongue. The King of Hell then proceeds to pass its judgement. If the person was lying or refused to answer the questions, the King of Hell would remove their tongue and consume it, killing them. However, if they told the truth, they would be spared, although left extremely exhausted.

(Gakidō) - Preta Path

Description: The user activates the Preta Path which grants the ability to absorb any chakra based attack using the Blocking Technique Absorption Seal, the user could absorb an infinite amount of chakra in any form. And the technique can be used in direct physical contact and absorb their chakra from their body or to create a barrier around them to absorb incoming Ninjutsu techniques.

(Chikushōdō) - Animal Path

Description: Nagato will activate the Animal path which grants him the ability to summon various creatures to help aide in battle. Each creature served a different purpose in battle. Each animal summon also has the Rinnengan and as such Nagato is able to see through their eyes as well. Each animal had various body piercings as well, suggesting that they too were under his control. The user needs to clap his hands in order to do the summons, not needing the traditional blood sacrifice and can summon 2 animals at the same time.

(Gedō) - Outer Path

Description: The Outer Path has control over Life and Death. Its the user himself who embodies the Outer Path and wields its abilities. However, he cannot use them directly but only through the King of Hell. Known as the Seventh Path, this path is required to use the (Gedō: Rinne Tensei no Jutsu) Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique, the technique through which the user releases the soul of those deceased into their bodies, using his regenerative abilities to revive them and bringing them back to life.

Chakra Receiver Manifestation (黒い棒, Kuroibō) → These cylindrical black rods allow the user to transmit their chakra across vast distances through an application of the Outer Path's ability. According to Shizune, these rods act as high-frequency chakra demodulators, which become appreciably warm to the touch whilst currently receiving chakra. They possess incredible durability, damaging every scalpel Shizune used to extract just a small sample during her autopsy of the first Animal Path, and even displaying some resistance when struck by Naruto's Rasengan. These chakra disruption blades are made from the same material as the chakra receivers used by Nagato. They originated from the black rod in the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path's abdomen. Nagato creates the blades as needed from both arms of any Path, with no apparent limit to their length. Pain can also detach the blade from the arms when requiring to use several of them, or to be thrown as spears. These blades disrupt the chakra of its victim, rendering them incapable of moving. When a victim is stabbed by the blades, the Rinnegan appears in their mind, implying that Nagato has some degree of influence over them, similar to how he controls the Six Paths. The blades are very sharp, as they were able to pierce the skin of Sage Mode users. Though the blades are made from durable material, they can be broken with enough strength.

Sensor Type (感知タイプ, Kanchi Taipu) → As a Sensor Type ninja from the Uzumaki Clan Nagato is capable of detecting chakra and techniques. His skill as a sensor type allowed him to perform great feats such as being able to detect the build of Amaterasu. He was even capable of sensing Kabuto Yakushi's position at a great distance allowing Itachi to confront Kabuto after his encounter with Naruto Uzumaki.

(Chakra Henkanshi no Jutsu) - Chakra Sensing Technique

Description: This is a very advanced of advancing the ability to feel chakra. The technique allows the user to concentrate and detect someones chakra. Using these technique sensors can tell when the enemy is approaching and can easily track down targets.

(Chakra Yokuatsu no Jutsu) - Chakra Suppression Technique

Description: This ability allows the user to suppress their chakra to the point that it is completely undetectable. This makes it impossible for chakra sensory-type ninja to track them via their chakra signal. However there is some downside to the technique, whilst suppressing their chakra they cannot use any of the ninja skills.
Note: Cannot prevent doujutsu users from detecting them and can only be used by Chakra Sensors.

Stamina and Life Force (生命力, Inochiryoku) → Nagato possesses an exceptionally strong and resilient life force and incredibly long life span. Nagato's chakra is incredibly strong as well even being capable of wiping out Konoha and being able to maintain battle with Uzumaki Naruto after this immense display of destruction. After their fight he possessed enough strength left to revive all of those killed in Konoha with the Rinne Tensei no Jutsu which is noted to be a technique that requires an immense amount of chakra. He is also capable of altering his chakra signature such that other sensor type ninja are incapable of detecting him. Due to his possession of the Rinnegan Nagato is granted an additional 750 chakra to his already large reserves.

Intelligence (インテリジェンス, Interijensu) → Besides his Rinnegan one of his more subtle traits is his great intellect. Time and time again Nagato has proven that he is an extremely gifted analyst and strategist. Nagato successfully launched an invasion against Konohagakure and did so simply with his Six Paths of Pein. Each path served a strategic purpose and successfully brought about the downfall of the village until Naruto arrived to defeat the Paths. Throughout the invasion Nagato was capable of engaging the entire village at once while keeping his true intentions secret and ultimately was able to accomplish his object of locating and engaging with Naruto.
