My theory on the Sharingan, MS, EMS:hooray:

Sharingan/MS
There is an old saying that the eyes are the window to the soul. From the moment an Uchiha obtains Sharingan special yin based chakras begin to sprout inside the users brain. My theory is that as the user experiences hardships these special chakra’s continue to develop and as these chakra’s develop so does the user’s sharingan. When the user experiences the ultimate hardship (the death of a loved one) their special chakra’s evolve even further and their Sharingan becomes MS.
This new development grants the user the ability to access the special yin chakra reserves that have developing inside the mind of the user gives the eyes the ability to perform powerful yin based techniques. Uchiha lack the strong yang chakra needed in order to counter balance their strong yin chakra. As a result MS techniques wear not only on the user’s eyes, but also their body until their eyes finally succumb to the continuous damage and cease to function.
EMS
An MS can regain eyesight by transplanting the eyes of another MS user. That person then obtains EMS. Though the special chakra’s of the Uchiha’s are housed inside the brain, from the moment an Uchiha develops Sharingan power begins being stored in the eyes as well. (This is the reason that non-Uchiha who take an Uchiha’s Sharingan or even MS can still utilize the eye’s powers, but because they lack the special chakras of the Uchiha the eyes takes an even heavier toll.)

Since eyes are the origin of the MS/EMS techniques any techniques that were possessed by the eyes’ former owner are accessible by the EMS user, all MS techniques evolve a step further, and the two user's susano'o merge.

A pretty general review on what we know so far, but points out the added detail of Yin (body) chakra that Uchiha lack. One thing that lacks being explained is exactly how EMS can remove vision loss of regular MS when they use their techniques.
