I think that Momoshiki and Kaguya once belonged to a royal monarchy on the Otsutsuki homeworld. The Otsutsuki homeworld became a "seed planet" and grew a Shinju either from bloodshed and war or otherwise but Momoshiki used his status to obtain the fruit for himself and it granted him God-like power. After obtaining such power his personality became twisted like what happened to the "once loving" Kaguya and he became a sadistic self-obsessed tyrant.
My theory on the Shinju is that it is an alien parasite that feeds on hatred and bloodshed to grow and once rooted in a planet begins to feed off of its natural energy until the planet dies which is eventually what happened to the Otsutsuki homeworld which I theorize is the desolate planet Momoshiki brings Naruto to to extract his chakra. The tree converts the absorbed natural energy into demonic chakra and stores it in the fruit. The fruit grants the consumer extended life and god-like power but only temporarily, in order to maintain the power you must continue to eat more fruits or you will become mortal once again, which is what drives Momoshiki to seek out more seed planets and fruits becauss his home planet that he had destroyed has already been sucked dry of its natural energy and life force.
Moving on, Kaguya knew that Momoshiki would eventually direct his insane power trip onto her, so she fled using advanced alien technology that would eventually be re-used by Hamura's descendants to construct the artifical world inside the moon. After arriving on Earth, which just so happened to be another seed planet, Kaguya attempted to shepard humanity into peace. However this did not work, so she ate the fruit and casted the infinite tsukyomi. At first the infinite tsukyomi was intended to create artificial peace by allowing the captured humans to experience a perfect dream world, but as the demonic chakra of the Shinju corrupted Kaguya's mind as it did her cousin Momoshiki she became paranoid of Momoshiki's inevitable invasion to obtain her chakra and extend his immortality. This resulted in her converting humans to Zetsu's and documenting her paranoia of Momoshiki's return on scrolls kept within secluded castles in her various dimensions.
Witnessing humans being turned into Zetsu's her 2 sons had realized their mother had lost her mind, and began plotting to overthrow her. Before long she turned on them instead, insisting they were thieves for inherting her chakra. The rest is history.
