In terms of plot, this came into my head.
I wrote a lot. Tell me what you think
So we realize that the Chunin Exams is going to play a large role in this movie. Now I doubt that can be a subplot, they will have to tie it into the main storyline seeing how the characters from Konohagakure would need to start the Exams, either the written, or the Forest of Death.
Now the movie actually may take place after the Chunin Exams Part 2, the exact time where Naruto and Jiraiya train alongside with Sasuke and Kakashi. Not here is my take:
Boruto is still complaining about not spending enough time with his father. In fact, he is constantly bothering him trying to grab his attention. For what reason? Because he needs Naruto to train him for the upcoming Part 3 of the Exams. Sarada is supposedly rival is already being trained to the core from her Sannin mother, which leads Boruto to be quite jealous.
Through his endeavors, Boruto failed to reach his goal which leads to Naruto scowling him, and telling him that as Hokage he cannot spend the time he wants to. Which prompts Boruto to possibly leave the village. Then, that's when he runs into Sasuke Uchiha. Because for this to make sense on Sasuke's Part, he would not need to be home. I hate SS, let me tell you. Anyway, I think it would be disrespectful for Sasuke to be spending time with Boruto aside from his family, so this would be the only option I see making this sound plausible. If not, I will enjoy the rage from the Naruto community all the same.
So Boruto leaves the village, and Naruto learns, and somehow he knows that Sasuke has him under his wing, or Sasuke tells him personally. So the movie continues with Boruto/Sasuke traveling, forming a bond, training, and Sasuke teaching him about Naruto and his past. This is where I believe Boruto would change as a character, because right now he is misleading similar to how people hated Sasuke early on for being an "*******" or "jerk" despite turning out to be a great charater in the end.
Towards the ending where Part 3 of the Chunin Exam starts, Naruto and Hinata, Sakura, and Himawari would be there in the stands, whilst Sarada would have just finished her battle. Leading her to becoming a Chunin. I would believe Boruto would face some kind of antagonist for his battle, an elite. Someone who would throw him off, similar to Naruto v. Neji or Sasuke v. Gaara.
Then when Boruto appears, it would be similar to the scene where Kakashi and Sasuke appear at the last minute. Prompting a flashback for the fans of Naruto, and showcasing Sasuke's character development throughout the movie as he became an overall decent human being after his Redemption Journey.
The rest of the movie would include fighting, him becoming a Chunin, Sasuke meeting up with his family finally, and with Naruto's family reaching Boruto. I would assume the child would apologize, or find someway to pay his respect to his father, mother, and his sister. Whom he all put to shame due to his behavior.
I would assume that the movie would end with Boruto and Sasuke parting ways since his "job is done" - Though, if it happens to be that Boruto leaves with Sasuke again. He would probably be one of the best characters in the series. Imagine his development and coming back 3 years of training with Sauske alone.
