After thinking about how Tobirama died I came with a theory.
It seems Hashirama lived long enough to play with Tsunade who at the time may have been 3 years or older. However, when Hiruzen was already much older, she was around 12 maybe. That would mean that Hashirama most likely was alive when Hiruzen became Hokage. Assuming Hashirama died before Tobirama, that would mean Tobirama did not die when he fought against 20 Shinobi from Kinkaku team.
What we know about Kinkaku and Ginkaku is that they once ambushed 2nd Raikage and Tobirama. We know that Tobirama survived, even if barely.
Most people assume Kinkaku and Ginkaku faced them alone and then at a later time Kinkaku team attacked Tobirama again.
But what if Kinkaku team ambushed 2nd Raikage, killed him and then went to attack Tobirama? For some reason Tobirama survived. Either they thought he was dead or had to leave before finishing him off. THere would be many scenarios where Tobirama barely survives. There could have also been reinforcements from either Kumogakure or Konoha.
Before we were introduced to Kinkaku and Ginkaku we learned that Tobirama fought against Kinkaku team. Later, after Kabuto revived Kinkaku and Ginkaku with Edo Tensei, there is a mention that they defeated Tobirama.
Perhaps we all wrongly assumed Tobirama died against 20 of them?
Also, assuming he survived, this would give him time to improve his Hiraishin, which would explain why his Hiraishin at the time was not enough to teleport to far away distances, such as Konoha.
You may say that if that was the case, Tobirama would appear older when revived with Edo Tensei. But if Hashirama who was older than Tobirama, yet died after playing with Tsunade, still appears young, then the same should go for Tobirama.
So, Tobirama probably died some years after that.
What do you think about my theory? If anyone else already predicted this or part of this, I give credit and do not claim this theory to be entirely mine.
