Gambling
Last year gambling made approximately 100 billion dollars. Gambling, sometimes known as “gaming”, is when you take a risk with money on the line in hopes of getting lucky and getting payed off more than the money that you put in. This brings up many ethical concerns. A lot of people do not believe one should be able to make money in such a manner. Some people disagree with gambling because it is against what their church believes. Which ever way you look at it some people do not like gambling. Not all of which are legal in the US. Most of the time when people think about gambling its really negative. A lot of my friends said that when they think of gambling things like drugs, prostitution, and *** are some of the words that come to mind but not everything about gambling is bad and that there are other types of gambling than just betting at the slots. There are many different forms of gambling and with each different form there are different legal concerns, from online gambling, to casinos, all the way to state lotteries.
Online gambling is a really generalized term. Online gambling involves many different games most of which can be found in a casino. The main reason why online gambling has seen a recent boom is because technology has also. Now a days almost everybody has a smartphone or a phone with access to the internet. This provides a gateway to online gambling from virtually anywhere.
Online gambling is currently illegal in the US. Grassi writes:
It authorizes the U.S. secretary of the treasury to create a licensing program for regulations and enforcement of the law, issuing licenses to online gambling entities, effective for a period of five years. Thus, it prescribes the licensing requirements for such Internet gambling entities and prohibits operation of an Internet gambling entity that knowingly accepts bets or wagers from persons within the U.S. without the necessary license issued from the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The law would prohibit a person, deemed prohibited from gambling with an online gambling entity, from collecting any winnings. Such a system to screen a gambler's veracity must be created by each gambling entity, and to be overseen by the federal government. And such is pure folly at this juncture. H.R. 2267 would require that an online gambling entity pay required taxes to the IRS. And most curiously of all, each gambling entity, itself, would need to implement safeguards against fraud, money laundering, and terrorist financing. In addition, each online license would require that gambling sites have strong protections in place to prevent minors from gambling online, and to prevent inappropriate online advertising targeted to underage gamblers or specifically aimed at compulsive gamblers. Not only must the gambling site maintain a list of compulsive gamblers, but must block them from site access. And it cannot allow access to its site for those individuals who are delinquent on child support payments. These are just some amongst many other illusory imperatives. Enforcement of U.S. law for the prevention of and tracking of electronic transactions of funds sent to terrorist organizations abroad has been weak at best through the U.S. Department of the Treasury, nine years since September 11, 2001 [referring to the 2001 terrorists attacks on the United States]. And to essentially require online websites to take on such a task is laughable.(1)

The fact that you can do this virtualy anywhere raises many different legal concerns , mostly because its so hard to identify the law breakers. For example if a kid wanted to gamble online they could if they wanted to and it would be really easy because no one would know he was a kid online. In the US it is
illegal to own a online gambling company but in other places it is not illegal like New Zeland,
Denmark, or Canada. Since you can gamble at home online you could be gambling in a place where it is illegal but it is legal at the place where the business is owned. Due to sovereignty though the US could not attempt to arrest the person on the other side of the website and most of the time US citizens get away with it and are partaking in an illegal activity. With all these concerns why not just make it legal? That is what I would do except I would restrict it so only adults could do it and if I saw need of any other restrictions I would implement them. This would make it way easier to deal with and control. It would also allow for international business inside the US if any websites decided to set up shop here. So as you can see legalizing online gambling would be very beneficial our country's economy because it would bring in new business opportunities.
Casinos are establishments in the US that are centers for Gaming or Gambling they are often more than just gaming centers most of the time they have a hotel or resturant in them too. The centers contain many different types of gambling games. Just to name a few: black jack, poker, roulette, and slot machines. These casinos are legal in only a select few of the fifty united states of America. One of the states where it is illegal is in fact that of our own, South Carolina.
Many people are aware that gambling is addictive. People go to Vegas all the time and bet their lives away but I think that with the right restrictions we could make casinos legal in South Carolina and make sure people do not get to crazy with their money. Just imagine all of the tourist we would have if we were one of the select few that allowed casinos?
There would be a big boom in tourism and that would result in more business. Another reason why we should legalize casinos is because it could bring in a lot of revenue to the state because we could place a tax on the casinos and any of the games played in them. Not only that but think of all the people you would need to run a casino/hotel. You would need security, camera guys, managers, waitresses/waiters, and the people that run the games. Just look at Las Vegas. It is a thriving community because of the casinos and flashy lights. Nevada taxes the casinos in Vegas and makes lots of money off of them.
If we were to legalize the use of casinos I would put them at the beach as it is already a tourist destination. This in turn would let the people that like the slower life style be left alone and the people that like more of a rush be able to make major risks. This would also keep things somewhat similar to the way they already are, with the beach a crowded and noisie area. Placing them at the beach would provide the most entertainment since it already has tourist like attractions. Like all other games casinos are purely played for enter entertainment. David waddle says:
A study conducted by the University of Nevada-Reno Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming supports the idea that casino gambling is simply another form of entertainment and that those who participate represent the general population. (1)
There have been studies that find a relationship between casinos and crime rate. The study's say

that casinos often double up the crime rate but this is not necessarily a bad thing though. Look at it like this. The casinos are going to bring in all sorts of people. Some people are going to be good some of them are going to be bad. With some more bad people you could hire more police and or security guards so that there would be even more jobs.
Like casinos could there is another form of gambling that helps the states, that would be the state lotteries. Lotteries have been around for years with the first one dating back to colonial times(II the history of gambling.). A lottery is when people buy tickets with requested numbers on the ticket. Later on there is a drawing where numbers are picked out of a container and if your numbers are picked then you win. Currently the only legal lotteries are run and sponsored by states. Some states still do not have lotteries though. In South Carolina the lottery helps us in many ways including jobs, revenue, and education hence the name the South Carolina Education Lottery.
The South Carolina lottery has made jobs for years. In order for our lottery to work we need people to run them. Some of the people that help run the lottery are the advertising companies, the grocery stores that sell tickets, the actual people that do the lottery pulling, and the state government. When ever lottery tickets are sold some of the money helps in each of these areas which in turn gives rise to job opportunitys.
