i think in his fight with hashirama, madara used the splitting tech to save himself, which resulted in as sated "him not being nearly as strong as he was when he fought hashirama". black zetsu then took one of the two bodies and left the other to die so that everyone can think hes dead.
black zetsu would later fuse part of his body into madara, saving his life and "accidentally" giving him eternal life, like how he "accidentally" got EMS when all he intended to do was get new eyes. (also resulting in black zetsu being disfigured as he is). they then took hashirama's blood and extracted the DNA and created white zetsu, which madara fused to black zetsu so he can regain the power he lost saving madara.
i think madara wanted to regain the power he lost, so he started the ninja war so he can see who is the strongest ninja to use. the first resulted in failure and during the second, he put two ninja under genjutsu and had them kill nagato's parents, awakening his rinnegan which can only be awakened in uzumaki due to their special chakra.
madara then planned to somehow fuse his and nagato's bodies, but getting crippled ruined that plan for madara. so he went to konoha to find another "vessel". there he found itachi, who i think promised madara that he could take his power once sasuke killed him (but itachi betrayed him with a fail safe by implanting the amaterasu in sasuke as a way to keep on his drive to protect konoha even after death), and let madara take all the sharingan we see him with as long as he left konoha alone.
however, itachi's illness left him useless, causing madara to want the rinnegan. after finding the sage's tablet, he changed his plan from just wanting a new stable body to wanting the perfect body and chakra by becoming the ten-tails jinchuriki
i forgot: he gave the rinnegan to nagat oso it could fully develop and grow accustomed to his body, which madara planned to take but nagato getting crippled ruined that
