My Muslim Friends Tell Me Islam Is About Peace and Love. Is this True?

In the wake of the paris attacks and everyone feeling scared my muslim friends assured me islam is a religion of peace and harmony is this really true? I ask because most religious extremist look to be associated in some manner or form with islam.

Like I said that is their interpretation, to them they are practicing their faith.

But to say they are extremists which suggest they are more thorough in practicing the faith then others is wrong because there are different interpretations, there is no way one can say that ISIS who don't even number in the millions have a better interpretation of a faith than the remaining 1.6 billion practitioners .

ISIS believes that is how the faith is some other believe different using the term extremist to refer to ISIS is wrong.

looking around on the internet and on the news what exactly do you see regarding islam, do you think it's peacefull?

keep in mind that both even though christians and jews are alot more peacefull than muslims, they don't go around proclaiming that they are the religion of peace, because they are not, they can't be.

sure there might be some very peaceful individuals within all those religions, but the religions as a whole are not peaceful.

It is not right at all, extremist and Islamist are both used to refer to ISIS which is wrong and inconsiderate of other muslims

In other words it is suggesting that ISIS members are better at practicing the religion then regular non violent muslims, which is an insult. Of course with such wording why wouldn't anyone believe that violence is what the religion is about.

Death penalty for apostasy doesn't seem very peaceful to me.

"Those who disbelieve will be forced to drink boiling water, and will face a painful doom. (Quran 6:70" <--- Not peaceful as well.

"Good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah has guarded. As for those from whom you fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. (Quran 4:34)" <--- Same here

They are quite extremist; there is no room for compromise, moderation, or any other competing social or moral value in their doctrine. They take a hard-line stance in ascribing to the most repressive interpretation of Islam, and enforce it through violence, both against their own populations or against those they perceive to be enemies of their Caliphate (i.e., just about everyone).

Islam is not practiced that way in the vast majority of Muslim-majority countries. Most of those countries do not impose the death penalty for apostasy, for instance. Frankly, it's not much different than comparing the present-day West to the Spanish Inquisition.

There are some flaws in all religions which does not align with today's society, so we need to revise these little laws in a more modern way so that Religion and man can go hand in hand. Mind this, Man is not made for Religion, Religion is made for Man. And if you want to follow religion, you should practice it in a more peaceful and a way which is Universally accepted. hmm the same goes for apostasy in christianity the punishment is stoning and people don't go out killing people so i don't see what you're trying to say??
