I can also be massively late on this.
Orochimaru I still believe is the most dangerous person out in the field right now.
This dude since before part 1 has been tinkering and experimenting with Hashirama's cells. (Danzo, Yamato)
so I would find it highly likely that he has some stash of Senju DNA for him to mess with somewhere.
He along with Kabuto, managed to decipher parts that one stone in the Uchiha hideout that requires the Rinnegan to make sense of.
Seeing his close involvement with Danzo and his ridiculous amount of eyeballs (sharinagan) AND Senju DNA it would only make sense if Orochimaru had some type of deal for his services... perhaps a few eyeballs of his own.
Now we know Orochimaru is a calculating man, waiting for the perfect time to strike and do his bidding, which leads me to his interest in Sasuke. Although he envied the sharingan for its abilities, it wasn't the eyes he wanted, but the DNA of the Uchiha. For him to have full control over an Uchiha body would mean full control over the sharingan as well. (look at kakashi, he must pay the price of incompatibility)

Orochimaru also located a source of natural energy in the form of a kekkei genkai to absorb natural energy passively through Jugo. We have seen multiple results in his experimentation to this. (Jugo, curse mark, curse mark jutsu, Kabuto) how in the world did he manufacture a kekkei genkai into a controllable jutsu? he must have sage powers himself albeit never announcing it in battle. (look carefully at how he resurrected himself through Kabuto and Anko)
ok ok now lets wrap everything up. access to Senju DNA, Uchiha body (Sasuke), knowledgeable of natural energy and sage arts, excessive experimentation with great successes. If anything his preparation looks like what Madara is now and what Obito was for a brief moment minus the bijuu. But nah, he isnt bent on destroying the lifestyle of the world, but just to have access to the possibility of fulfilling his dreams.
In his head he wanted to combine the universe's 3 greatest observable powers Senju, Uchiha, Sage, and have complete control over it and be in balance of the 3. (no plot-no-jutsu doesnt count!)
Although he did mention an interest in Naruto's power (really his bijuu) he has never really stepped out of his way to obtain that kind of power, outside of joining the Akatsuki. But we all know that was to observe Itachi and possibly research how the heck the leader got rinnegan and how bijuu actually work. (for closure on his parents of course).
