My Little Pony Confusion?

Ok I am so far beyond trying to figuring this out for myself, can someone please explain what the great thing about this brony stuff is? The reason I ask is a friend of mine is a fan bordering on the fact that if I tease him about it in the slightest he almost starts crying (which really does not help him in any way).

I'm not looking for people to tell me to watch it, and I'm not attacking I am legitimately asking what the big ass deal is with the show that was literally designed to be for little girls?
