Ren has long dark blue hair that falls straight down her back, with bangs framing her face, red eyes (unfortunately completely devoid of any special powers), and wears an outfit of her own design that consists of a long thick dark blue scarf that covers her mouth and neck, dark blue arm-guards, a long sleeved black chain mail top under a sleeveless black gi, a dark blue belt tied at her waist over black hakama, and dark blue socks inside a set of standard dark blue ninja sandals. She has altered her hakama and gi, adding hidden pockets that conceal basic ninja tools.
Personality:
A first generation ninja from a poor family, Ren considers herself lucky to have such supportive parents to allow her to pursue her dreams rather than work at a menial job. She aspires to become a 'perfect shinobi' like the second Hokage, and looks up to him as her idol.
Her training philosophy revolves around mastering the basics and getting really really good at only a few things. She enjoys the satisfaction of refining a single technique further and further as a past time unto itself. Ren is the type of person who always tries to figure out how to solve a problem with the tools she has rather than the tools she doesn't.
She favors basic ninja tools, especially Kunai, as her go to weapons whenever possible.
She appears to be the stoic sort at first glance because of the flat expression she tends to wear, but this is actually just a poker face that she mostly abuses for comedic purposes, especially for her 'signature gag' where she refers to charts and graphs that she has somehow pulled out of nowhere with a serious look on her face as she makes completely ridiculous statements and conclusions about things in front of an audience in order to provoke a reaction out of them.
She is supportive of her friends and comrades, and is always willing to work with someone to help them refine a technique or brainstorm new ways to use one or to try and cheer someone up with her attempts at comedy.
As for hobbies, she enjoys Go, though she is actually pretty bad at it because she spends the whole game trying to draw pictures with the stones without giving it away rather than trying to win. She still insists that she won though if she manages to draw the picture that she wanted to, and will admit a loss if she was unable to draw anything good even if she ended the game with more points than her opponent. She also enjoys lazing around on the water as well as playing the flute.

History:
Katsumi Ren's family immigrated to Konoha shortly before she was born from a small town in Mizu no Kuni after it was mostly destroyed towards the end of the 3rd great shinobi war. Her family's talents leaned towards the mediocre, and few of them had a formal education, resorting to menial labor to make ends meet.
Though her parents could have used her assistance to help keep the family finances afloat, they instead indulged her in her dream to become a ninja, wanting a better life for her than they had.
Grateful for the opportunity, Ren trained hard in the academy and scored high on all practical tests, but did poorly on the paper tests as she had a tendency to let her imagination run wild and write down crazy hypothetical situations that would escalate every d-rank scenario into the 4th great shinobi war, or go on at length about imagined details of the lives of historical figures that that tended to be completely absurd, to the frustration of her teachers. She enjoyed taking paper tests and doing homework as it helped her exercise her imagination, even if she scored poorly on all of them.
As a fresh Genin, Ren was assigned to a very generic team that worked decently together, enough so that her teammates passed the Chunin exams just 1 year after graduation and moved on without her. Since then, she has been added to multiple teams who have gone on to get promoted to chunin... but not Ren, never Ren. When it came down to it, no matter how hard she trained Ren just didn't have the chakra capacity to use techniques higher than D rank. The judges would never promote someone like her over other, more flashy candidates.
Not one to give up, Ren decided that if she was going to be a Genin forever, then she would become the 'Perfect Genin'. She would strive to master all basic ninja arts to the highest possible degree, and then go on to create her own. By a few months after she had made this decision, Ren had fallen in love with her basic ninja arts even more than before.
She became content to spend the rest of her days refining the basics and carrying out C rank missions to test her skills.
At that point, she wouldn't have accepted a promotion even if they offered it to her.
