You're so sure that war won't happen when literally every Republican in congress wants to go to war. I think this is kind of funny.
The only thing stopping this war is Obama and all they need is one more thing to pin on Putin. If a Republican is elected in 2016, the chances of this NOT happening become bleak.
It doesn't matter at the moment though.
Actually, the Democrats are beating the war drums just as hard (if not harder) than the Republicans.
Just about the only people stepping up and saying: "Whoa... whoa - wait a minute" are the dreaded 'tea party' Republicans. Well, and the average citizen who has enough common sense to see that we have bigger problems than Russia's claims to natural gas resources.
You see - people like Feinstein (Obama's cabinet) are trying to drag Putin through the mud on this one:

When it was actually the Ukraine government that orchestrated the MH17 shoot-down. The ATC in contact with MH17 -had- to order the flight through the conflict zone (which it had avoided the previous 11 fly-overs) and order it to lower altitude.
Within minutes of the plane going down, the equivalent of the Ukraine Secret Service came along to seize all ATC recordings.
It's debatable as to whether or not the Rebels actually had a BUK missile system in the theater (as the tweets/facebook posts by rebels are hardly solid evidence as I can create a facebook page that looks the same and makes the same claims) - although the missile system is relatively prevalent enough that just about any of the region's contenders could plausibly have one in the area (including U.S. backed operatives).
Everyone has been exceptionally quick to pin this on Putin - which makes literally zero sense as neither the Rebels nor Russia really gain from this incident in the slightest. Even if it were a legitimate accident (which the evidence suggests it is not) - it's a war zone - people die in war zones... kind of the point of war. Take the lesson for what it is and stop trying to make the war bigger.
Bluntly - Obama needs to shut his damned cake hole and get back on the golf course. His whole cabinet should join him. Then every effort needs to be made to keep them there. Away from everything and everyone. Take away his pen. And for God's sake take away his phone.
If America went to war with Russia they would be breaking international law, they have no grounds for war. Russia have made no direct attacks on America. If America attacked Russia now, nearly every country would be against them. I can't see the future but if America did that, they would be highly risking there ties on a worldwide level, this would effect them on every level. That would be very sad and serious. That is why old men should not run countries.
Let's introduce this set of statements to reality.
So the world's most powerful military industrial complex breaks international law. We're criminals. We're guilty. We're not sorry.
What's going to happen?
You're going to file a lawsuit?
In what international court?
You'll establish one? Try building it under a hail of bombs.
The reality is that countries can and will do whatever the hell they want to. There is no such thing as international law to protect you, or anyone else. As close as we got to international law were things like U.N. resolutions. Those were not so much 'laws' as much as they were a commitment of nations to enforce certain actions - and most of the time that meant the U.S. and Britain with a few NATO nations tossed in because they like to come along, too.
But, now, NATO is going to break up. The whole situation in Israel is polarizing the member nations, and while our current presidential administration is blatantly anti-israel - the general populace is more supportive of Israel than Hamas, and that will end up being the way our nation comes down on the issue when NATO nations begin throwing resources into that region (because no one can keep their nose out of other people's business).
I don't think very many people truly appreciate how dangerous of a time we are entering into or have the slightest idea how catastrophic the coming conflicts will be. Direct casualties of the coming war(s) will quite possibly number in the hundreds of millions across the globe and indirect casualties will reach into the billion mark. Many 'modern' nations will struggle with controlling disease outbreaks that have been absent from their population for generations. Tuberculosis will become fairly prevalent once again and the potential for a re-introduction of smallpox into the human population is quite possible.
If smallpox gets back into the human population - within two years the world's population will be cut by roughly 30%.
Aggregate casualties in the 60 or even 80% are quite possible under 'worst case' models.
Moderate expectations sit at around 40% aggregate global casualties with the reintroduction of smallpox since the disease will compound with many of the other indirect casualties that would have caused death, anyway.
Of course - I'm no expert... but... *shrug*. Let's hope I'm horribly wrong and everything turns out just fine.
