I get tired of people posting art saying it's theirs when it just isn't. Alot of the fan art people put up are images that already exist, it's very unfair for people getting credit for something which requires little imagination.

It might seem harsh (probably because I AM an artist) but it's the truth. IF people do fan art of a character in a different pose or style seen before then it's unique.

Lol this is BS. you are saying that you're only an artist when you make something different or pose. Tell that to every artist there is, being unique is difficult in these days. Why would you invent something new if it already exists? I am a graphic designer it's my job, and I don't always create things from scrap. and I always look on the internet. it's the number one source for inspiration.

I've never made fan-art based on an already existing image.....always an original scene.

But if you ask me, coloring something in and making it look good is a lot harder than drawing it. So if people color in a manga page of Naruto and make it look awesome, I'd commend their ability and still call it fan-art. Just look at my sig.

I agree with the colouring of images, because you are using skill. It takes time, an idea of shadows/light, and of course all those layers on Photoshop.

It's not what they're drawing, it's how well they draw it that's complimented. Even if it was drawn by someone else first, it still takes skill to draw it well.

i can fully understand what you are saying (im an artist too.)

BUT

copying is also an art, yeah your sitting there saying no one can copy but you are wrong.
Copying an image to make it look like the original is very hard, even tracing is hard and yes it is.

however, like you are saying, claiming thei work to a certain level must be looked upon.
eg, if someone drew naruto but with minor changes and claims it his/her work.
then it is his/her work but not the origins of their work. AND to some extent, the work the have done.

Agreed that using resources on the internet is very important. When I mean different I mean relying on your own style to create work, it's fine to get inspiration from artists and pictures.

I wouldn't get upset about it though, everyone has to start somewhere, It's apart of learning and getting better.

It's like when people do covers of songs, it's the same thing. There's no originality in it but it's necessary for some when it comes to learning and helps.

Now straight taking a image off of the internet and saying it's yours is one thing. Drawing an image you like I see nothing wrong with. Just like drawing something you see in real life, you didn't create it but it helps with practicing and getting better.

I think you got what I was trying to get across. I'm not very good at explaining things very well.

When I first got into drawing, I took inspiration from Todd Mcfarlane's Spawn. I loved the detail, but I never tried to draw something he had done. As of now I prefer drawing my own things because it's more fun that way.

Every now and again I'll take inspiration from something or get excited about a certain character (i.e Kid Buu, top left 2nd picture in Avatar) and do a fan art of it.

Well I'd say if someone draws an image, even if a remake, from scratch is art. It takes the talent to derive this piece even if it is a replica.

Just look at the Roman Marble replicas of Greek Bronze Statues: Notably the Severe style.

Are you going to claim those Romans were not artists?! I'd hardly imagine so.

I personally use GIMP for fun. Most of my work (Avatar and Sig), comes from images I find online. I usually then edit them with a plethora of things: Opacity, lighting, colors, contrast, etc. I don't call myself an artist, but in a sense I do create new art from an edited collage of other artworks.

I edited the Blood to look Green. Cropped out huge portions of the resurrection piece, and changed its Opacity. The main Ulquiorra is actually transparent so I had to erase anything behind it as well.

Is it an original image: yes; however, it's derived from other already established images that were then created individually by an actual artist. So I basically created a collage of three people's art that may be replicas of already made images.

Those three are artists as they had the skill to draw those, I'm not an artist, but I still made something that's artistic.

For example, my Avatar contains a collage of three photos: Ulquiorra, Ulquiorra in his resurrection, and a Blood drip image.

That's what I saying though man, people have to get to the point where they can freely create first.

Replicating images gives them a feel for the craft.

I totally agree with you. Anyone can just copy a picture if they just focus. At least an image from a manga for example.
I at least draw from my head and use my imagination even though my drawing are sucky. Oh well.
