Here is a few Anime I am almost certain that they would make an impression on you.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
Hunter x Hunter (The new version from 2011)

These are Shonen with characters who fight. And they are great.

Code Geass
Monster
Steins Gate

And these two are not with fighting protagonists. In Code Geass, there is a lot of battle of wits, like in Death Note. And Monster is a great story. But it feels different to other Anime I named. And Steins Gate is a science fiction with an amazing story.

Ok the main one you should watch first is:

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

It's really one of the best. And I don't think a single person will disagree.

Darker than Black.
Guilty Crown.

If you're willing to read mangas, too, then I'd also recommend Akame ga Kill and Tokyo Ghoul. Don't even bother to check out their anime adaptions though.​

No you don't, Brotherhood is a remake version of the original. Brotherhood follow the manga while the original started off by following the manga, then went it's own way. So pretty much Brotherhood was written by the author of the manga while the original was written by the animation team.

Brotherhood is definitely better, give it a shot! It's probably my all time favorite.

Um I'll say something no one has said ok? InuYasha and Yu Yu Hakusho.... Just 2 that are long-ish haha. Oh and Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, but not Dragon Ball GT ew... I think that's settled for you for a while haha
