I was born in 1986. I played the tuba and piano through high school and still play the piano. I have my roots in classical music but I also love rock and pop. I also grew up listening to the music of my parents generation which included a wide array of bands like,
Beach Boys, Animals, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen, Mamas and the Papas,Beatles,Eric Clapton, R.E.M., Supertramp, Simon and Garfunkel, Billy Joel, STYX, The Who, Pearl Jam, Santana,Jimmy Hendrix,Allman Brothers...the list goes on and on.
I also listened to the music of my generation i.e. 1990-2000 which included bands such as, Goo Goo Dolls, Blink 182,Green Day, Cranberries, Collective Soul, Red Hot Chili Peppers,Offspring,Nirvana,Counting Crows,Hootie and the Blowfish...etc
The reason I list these bands is I've been thinking about bands today in comparison to what I grew up with and also what my parents listened to. It seems to me the bands today are not making the cut. At least for me their not. Goods bands are out there, but as a majority the whole is not up to par, IMO. I've been thinking about why that is. I think it's because the bands of today don't have enough inspiration. During my parents generation there were wars, protests, and riots. In my early years their weren't as many of those things, but technology was relatively new in comparison to what it is today. I think that their is a lack of activity in current affairs in this generation due to no active war like Vietnam, WWI,WWII, etc. This leads to less inspiration for material. With technology being more incorporated into music (i.e. voice syncing, computers), people have become lazy in writing melodies and chord progressions.
Long story short, this generation has little inspiration for the songs they write, and the songs they do write are lacking the fundamentals of good melodies and chord progressions. Sorry for such a long rant, but what do you think of today's music?
