Similar suggestion, still awaiting feedback from an admin:
--------------------------------------

My suggestion here is Post Auto-merging. What this basically does, is merges your posts in a row into the first one. Saves moderation time, less work for staff. Us members don't have to be constantly telling others to merge posts.
This can be added to selected user groups, eg. only for regular members, premium users and designers. Anyone outside those groups can multi-post without it being merged (eg.Admin, G-mods and regular mods). There won't be anymore infractions for multi-posting, when sometimes the offence isn't even intentional. I believe there was one back in 08, not sure of 09 or 2010 though. I think we should have it once more.

You must be registered for see images

The following can be customized/set/enabled.

Time Limit: if more than xxx minutes have passed since the last post, no merge is done.

Timestamp Spacer: If enabled, a timestamped spacer is added between the old post text and the new post text.

Post Timestamp Update: If enabled the newly merged post will have its post time updated to the new time, otherwise it retains the time of the original post.

Spacer Colour: Allows you to set the colour of the spacer between merged posts.

Usergroup exceptions: Allows you to exempt certain usergroups from the doublepost merges.

Forum exceptions: Allows you to exempt certain forums form the doublepost merges.

I like the idea. They should make an exception for the Bio section because I like having a second post for notes.

I'd fully support this, it's the only rule I break, I can't stand how their current system for it works. :/

Good idea. It will surely reduce the burden of mods watching over us. But the downside imo, we can double/triple/multi post without any caring as the respective program will do its job, also it may end up in wierd, not intentional phrases or sentences as the posts are combined, it will become funny imo...

I love the idea. Like you said, it will make it easier for the mods and for people searching for a post or something like that.

That would only be purposely done by the simpleminded people/trolls. Civilized people wouldn't abuse it.

Why is this suggestion always ignored? Clearly with all the specifications it would work well, + we have the right version of V-bulletin

I like the idea, but I do like increasing my post count in Forum Games which means that it will take 3 times as slow to increase our post count.

Or, we could simply avoid multi-posting and merge our own posts. I get where you're coming from, but laziness and ignorance are not reason enough for me to agree with the implementation of a feature that will most assuredly slow down the servers/refresh rate/load time of the pages.

It really isn't that difficult to 1. Avoid multi-posting in the first place, or 2. Multi-quote and 3. Copy the new reply, edit the last post, and successfully merge what would have been an unnecessary second post.

The other reason I oppose this feature is because it doesn't teach people anything. All it does is "correct" the mistake without correcting the behavior. Those are just my thoughts, and they are my opinion. Disagree as you will, but don't bother trying to "change" my view or further explain why it should be implemented as I'm not a fan of the feature and I never will be. Multi-posting is not a rampant issue on the forums IMO, so I don't think a feature which will slow things down is warranted.

Interesting thread. I want to see where this develops although I do oppose the idea.
