Much as I like Naruto, I can't help but think Kishimoto has lifted whole swathes of his story from other sources. One area that I think people rarely pick up on is how much Kishi "borrows" from what would commonly be recognised as B-Movies. With that in mind I thought it's about time that those movies got recognised for their contribution.
If you have any movies that you think inspired Kishi in his writing, make a post starting with the title of the movie, add a brief description of how you think that movie lent itself to Naruto, let us know what you think of that movie and then decide whether you think it's an homage or a rip off.
I'll start with a movie legend - Bruce Lee - and an obscure film called the Crow.
You may have realised that Bruce Lee is the model on whom Might Gai and Lee are based. What you might not have realised is that Itachi is also connected to Kishi's love of all things Bruce Lee.
Bruce Lee had a son who was raised in the US and had a very short lived movie career. Brandon Lee followed in his father's footsteps as an aspiring martial artist. Unfortunately Brandon Lee died tragically during the shooting of a film called "The Crow". In a shootout scene, Brandon was shot with a live round by an extra that was supposed to be a using a blank. The film was almost complete and the director was able to finish the movie despite the death of its star. While the movie was never going to be a AAA blockbuster it was moderately successful and broke new ground for a superhero film (it's something of an emo classic). The film is given an eery weight by the knowledge that it sees the end of a very promising young talent.
If you have seen the film you will instantly recognise much of the imagery used in the character of Itachi, including his design, the poses he strikes, his detached persona, anti-hero cool, dress and love of crows. Some panels in the manga are lifted straight from the movie.
Overall I'd rate this as an Homage rather than a rip off. If you haven't seen the movie (and you meet its age restriction) then I'd urge you to check it out. It's far from the greatest movie ever made but it is well worth watching if you get the chance. If you think Sasuke is Emo, wait'll you see the Crow.
