The more credible translations to me are the ones that are "casual". If its too "fromal" I directly know its not a good translation. Why? Because characters in the anime do not talk formally. And if you go reread the manga , the characters don't talk "formally" all the time.

What about you guys?

VIZ translations are typically the best. Scanlations get the message through but some things are lost in translation (jokes, etc) and a LOT of things are taken out of context...

VIZ Scans translated by Viz media > All others.

Google Viz Media and you'll see why.

Of course, thats the volume translations. And I agree some things are lost in translations. Jokes and etc only get through non-formal translations.

But we gotta wait so long for them tho. X_X. The volumes comes so late v-v

Viz > *********** >mangapanda (what is on NB)

Actually *********** is like the most FAKEST and REAL at the sametime.

But hope you do know i'm talking about the weakly translations. However for the past chapters Mangapanda > ***********. *********** makes it to "formal"

OFFICIAL VIZ TRANSLATIONS come with the Volumes, which we have to wait for v-v. So I'm not talking about those.

I see it other way. People with a more formal english, NORMALLY have more knoeledge regarding translation and linguistics in general (again, NORMALY, not everytime). They also seem to put more effort into the stuff they do, so I find their translations more believable.
As so my favorite scanlations are the ones from ***********, but normally I read both, Panda and Stream, to compare, and maybe get any missing information, and in a more personal note, I find the MangaPanda being the ones with more confirmed mistakes/wrong lines etc of all.

But in the end I think it's my hipster saying that I need to read the *********** xD

But the problem is the following: People don't talk formal language all the time..... nor in Japanese do they talk in formal.

To me the casual translations are believeable why? more realistic.

Japanese culture is a little different from western cultures in this respect. Language, there, tends to be a much more formal and structured system all together. There is less overall tolerance for liguistic degenerates compared to western societies. This is the same for many asian languages.

Perhaps the most difficult part of translation between the eastern and western languages is the social context and importance of the spoken word. If I say: "This is going to be troublesome" in one situation, then use "this is going to be problematic" in another situation - most would agree, among native English speakers, that the two statements are identical for all intents and purposes. In the asian languages - it can more often be interpreted that the word has a more reserved meaning, and that is how people go about communicating.

So even if you can translate accurately - the point can often be lost as you can rarely drive home the point that an English word chosen because of its better fidelity to the Japanese meaning is intended to be distinctive from its many synonyms. In many cases, most people aren't even aware of the more arcane differences between synonyms.
