You're right with the comparison to the African American situation. But it takes time, progress is taking place. Social hypocrites exist but such air-heads have no worthy opinion.Us homosexuals are always going to be treated differently, the same as with African Americans.
We have a long history of hate, and there is still homophobic people who live their lives only to make gay people's lives hell. Others, who aren't sure what it is, blindly follow what's the 'popular' thing to do.
My rights are not an option, but like you said, some people just blindly agree even though they have no idea about what they're fighting so hard to protect. We aren't women. We are just as strong in every physical way, and even more psychologically.
This world is full of double standards, and always will be. It's human nature.
I believe (and a homosexual friend does too) that homosexuality cannot be special. It's as normal as heterosexuality, and the attitude that hatred is coming from every corner will serve the LGBT cause negatively because having equal rights as heterosexuals will not happen without trying to live normally and showing others the quite ordinary reality of homosexual life. My friend writes political criticisms, has her uni-related ups and downs, and is a great cook. Far more interesting qualities than her being a lesbian, don't you think ?
Of course she had her homosexuality related problems with family, and she's cautious around some people, but she's moving forward; her family accepts her, and she has the rest of her life waiting for her. She can't be chained by all the possibilities of things going wrong.
Homophobia will not be overcome by succumbing to it.
