I've finished Monster quite a bit ago but I was wondering if my interpretations on some events made much sense, because it felt like a bit of guesswork on my part. I don't know if actual answers are more clear than I had originally thought of but...
I swear I had more but this is what I thought of thus far...
My interpretation so far:
What's the significance of the "scenery of doomsday" or the nameless world?
What were Johan's goals? It seemed that he wanted to be the last man standing at first, but ended with wanting to commit a "perfect suicide". They expanded on that a bit but it seemed hard to comprehend for me.
What exactly did all of the symbolism in the Nameless Monster point to?
My interpretation so far:
Johan was born a "monster". On that fatal decision when choosing which child to send with Bonaparte, the mother hesitated. Apparently, the monster inside of her reared its ugly head. She tugged at Johan first, but let Anna go instead. My guess is that she wanted Johan to destroy Bonaparte but felt guilt with choosing between them and sent his sister instead. I don't believe Johan accepted this until the end. But I'm sure he still held it within his mind. Their mother had given them names before, and personally I bet she named him none other than Johan: the prince in the book who had a monster inside of him. That's why when general Wolf gave him the name a second time, it confirmed the fact that he was truly "evil". Remember when Wolf said that something happened when he gave Johan that name? Fishy fishy...
Could committing the perfect suicide be a way to erase the fact that his mother dubbed him a monster? Does he have conflicting feelings on whether his mother ever wanted him or not? I really can't confirm it.. but I think it's plausible. The scenery of doomsday is a bit weird, and still plagues my mind. I guess he was hell bent on being the last human alive before, and so this is a special gift for those who had saved his life. Guess he wanted others to experience his dream.
As far as the book goes.. I have a few possible theories but I'd like to hear what others had to say first.
