Summary: What is the mirror of life changed its own path and merely... pushed one event forward. The Fourth Great Shinobi War. Except it happened eight years earlier. Describes the war and then the aftermath of war on the survivors.
Chapter 1:
Prologue
I am six and the world is perfect. The sun shines and I haven’t seen a single glare today! It is so peaceful!
I am eight and the world is no longer peaceful.
One day, I’m laughing. Pranking everyone, being chased by numerous shinobi and just the normal haphazard lifestyle that is mine. My class smiling, Iruka-sensei smiling at me in particular. Life was perfect. Then my birthday, yet another day of hiding in my closet as drunk goons ransacked my apartment. Then the next day.
The meeting was adjourned. Every current and in-training shinobi is in attendance, from trainees to genin right up to ANBU.
The higher ups looked troubled. They look scared and a little lost. It shakes me to my very core to see Iruka’s mouth so tight and his eyes ringed by dark circles.
When the Hokage steps up, they fall silent. It is catching, this grave feeling. A few have guessed and watch as their suspicions come true.
“Konohakagure is going to war.”
You could’ve heard a pin drop in that silence. It was five words that shattered the peace of Konoha.
The silence was unbroken, not by whisper. Not by a sound. Even the soft rustle of leaves was muted.
The Academy students listen as they are informed that they would be graduating at age eight, four years early. Iruka watches with horror-struck eyes as they are each handed a hitaite. It used to be an honour but now…
We feel like we are being handed a death sentence.
I notices we are given white fabric compared to the red of the higher levels and the black of the ANBU.
The answer we are given shocks us.
The first kill will turn the fabric pink, gradually turning darker as the tally goes higher. They are white, the colour of purity. The colour of innocence. Bloodstains cannot not ever be washed off. The blood will stay. For long after you have scrubbed the gore and slimy blood of your hand, its will always be blood stained. Each kunai still holds the blood of its latest victim.
War is no time for the softhearted.
Chapter 1
I know what I am, what my duty is. A jinchuuriki is the biggest weapon in this war. A massive advantage.
I am placed on a team with two other genin, a boy called Lee and another boy called Neji.
One is like me before, smiling and joyful. The other is like me after, cold and aloof. And they both are hiding. Hiding secrets and hiding the truth.
I realises my duty yet the other two seem to be thick. They treat it almost like a game, a competition. They have skipped one fact in their decision process.
They have to kill. They will take lives and yes, they may lose their own.
They do not realise this and I think them to be more childlike than I am. They are so naïve. They see only the coolness and the respect they think they will gain.
Maito Gai, my sensei, understands.
I have seen Gai before, training Lee and wearing a green spandex one-piece suit. Shouting about the power of YOUTH! Or something of the sort. This person is different.
He wears black shinobi pants and a blue sleeveless top, with a green jounin vest placed over the top. Blue gloves coat his hands and a tanto is strapped to his back. On his left arm, the team can clearly see an ANBU tattoo. This man is serious.
The day after this is their first mission.
I arrive completely different in appearance. I now wear a customised ANBU uniform, similar to Gai. Black pants, black top and gloves, grey vest. A tanto is strapped to my back, its handle within easy reach.
I misses my orange but knows the change to be necessary. But still, if one can hide in orange, one can hide in anything.
I notice the other two in identical garbs. This is our team outfit, given to us by Gai. I added the tanto myself though. We are given the Team name Senkou (Flash), each of us being high in speed, precision and stamina. Its fitting and we like it. It’s almost as cool as my suggestion of Team Believe it but I was shouted down.
We begin to introduce ourselves.
Maito Gai merely lists his faults and weaknesses: He is fast, a taijutsu expert and has three affinities: Fire, earth and lightning. He can be caught off guard by wind jutsu and has a fear of loneliness.
Rock Lee introduces himself and says his likes and dislikes. Gai does not ask for a dream. Dreams mean nothing in times of war.
He likes dango and training. He dislikes prodigies and bullies. He is a taijutsu expert and prefers knife fighting. He cannot use chakra. He is nine, a year older than me. There isn’t much more that can be said.
Hyuuga Neji is next. He is also a year older than me. He likes tea and training, as well sushi. He is strong in his clan styles and uses the Byakugan. His affinity is water and earth.
I’m stumped on how to do this. I just tell the truth.
“I am the Jinchuuriki for the Kyuubi no Kitsune. My strengths are my physical speed, my affinity of jutsu and my unpredictable taijutsu style, as well as having a demon sealed in my gut. I have affinities for wind and lightning, as well as fire from Kitsune-baka. I am eight. I don't expect you to like me, just do your job.”
They just stared at me in shock. I just blatantly admitted something, which they would think I would hide at any cost. They think me strange, to act in such away. As well as the fact I just referred to a giant furball of pure chakra with a penchant for destruction an idiot fox.
God help Konoha, if this is the guy who is their main weapon. Most likely the thoughts going through their heads are along these lines.
After the first mission, they don’t think it so strange.
“Gai-sensei, what is our mission?” The excited and innocent face of Lee stares up at Gai and he clenches his teeth, dreading what he must do.
“Flash, gather.” They gather around him, two excited faces and one blonde with haunted eyes. Gai knows, I know. It is unlikely they will survive this war. Even if they do, perhaps it would be more merciful to die. I know that I will have to kill and kill many. My shoulders are stiff, not fighting the heavy burden settling over my shoulders.
Gai wishes that such a child did not have to shoulder this burden. He wishes for peace. He knows this to be a hollow dream.
“The mission is simple. We are scheduled to attack a fort near the border of Hi and Tsuchi. The force of the enemy is noted as two chuunin, seven genin and 1 jounin. There are also ten untrained mercenaries who are stationed as guards.”
They stare in shock. Surely this is a nightmare.
“We have back up right?” The silence fills the gap in Neji’s sentence.”Right?” His voice rises in pitch, fear clouding his eyes.
Gai doesn't wish to see this but it is his duty.
“We are the only team of this mission. We are a high combat team and you must grow used to this. We will most likely be in combat for the next five years or more. The mission requirements are to eliminate all hostiles.”
They are eerily quiet, each shocked and horrified, some more than others. I merely meet Gai’s gaze with my own and Gai realises something. I have always known I was a weapon. Perhaps all this time…
Shaking his head to clear his thoughts, Gai turns his gaze back to his shell-shocked team.
“We leave in an hour. Pack light and arm up heavy. Meet here.”
I pack heavy on weapons. In total, I have twelve mini scrolls which each contain sealed weapons, set to rush out. My tanto is strapped to my back and my kunai pouch, positioned behind on my right leg, is packed to bursting point. I have senbon lining the vest and about a hundred in another pouch on my right side, just above the other. On my left, my pouch was almost breaking as the shuriken I had packed jostle and fight against the cloth restraining them. My ANBU vest had several pockets and each is filled with miniature kunai, senbon, and shuriken and exploding tags. I’m armed and I’m ready but if my deal with Kyuubi holds up, I shouldn’t even use half of them.
I knew approaching the Kyuubi had been a foolish move but acknlowledged it as necessary. Pinning the Kyuubi down had taken time but eventually, I’d done it by holding him down with my mind. It amused me slightly to see the great Kyuubi no Kitsune down on the ground, held down by the mind of an eight year old. Its was pretty ironic.
A deal was struck and Kyuubi could be counted on to not interfere. Of course, my7 team would figure it out later. It would be hard on them but they’d get over it I figured.
Regardless of how I act, I’m not stupid. Nor am I ignorant. No matter my test scores in the Academy, I know a lot about the world. Living in the Red Light District since age four would do that to you. So I know that I will have to do things I don’t want to do but are necessary.
Such was the life I had chosen.
Lee and Neji were still as naïve as ever but at least they knew their basics. Each wore their hitaite in a strategically placed postion, covering a soft spot in their defences. For example, Lee had his wound around his forehead, protecting his head from strikes. Neji was the same but I sensed another reason behind the placement of his hitaite.
Mine however was placed securely around my throat. My throat was a weak spot for me, because my skin was softer there. It also looked awesome, believe it! Damn it. I thought I got rid of it once and for all.
Staring at my team, I just hope we are ready.
My gut prickles, as if foreshadowing this day.
