Hello, fellow members. Tonight I want to share with you an anime I discovered recently(but do not read this thread if your mind is too narrow). It's called Mononoke, as the tittle says (Mononoke, btw are a type of ayakashi, unnatural spirits that linger in the human world). It was run from July 12, 2007 to September 27, 2007. It was produced by Toei animanion and its based on one of the arcs of Ayakashi Japanese Classic Horror.
Now, this a horror anime series that follows the character of the medicine seller as he continues to face myriad supernatural perils.
What I find truly enjoyable about this anime is its direction (ran by Nakamura Kenji). It's not the classical type of animation, I assure you (so if you're too used to it, do not try Mononoke). The art has a very stylized design that reminds the (not only the contours remind them, but also the colors and animation motives). With such artwork, we get the perfect amatmosphere of the Edo period.
However, Mononke's oddness does not end here. The animation it self isn't exactly fluid. Sometimes the frames seem to be static and the action relies on the sound. Also, the frames suddenly "jump" to another scene (for example, there's this girl on the episode 1 that is staying on the forbidden room of an inn. She lies on the futon, and suddenly the image you see is that of a Dharma doll on the table. The girl grabs it and the image jumps again to a door. The image gets there some seconds, while a childish voice says "Give it back".) So, it gets strangely trippy at times. The story pace is told by some sort of acts, that arise and build the suspense very well -tho you might get confused as well xd- and the topics they touch are not suitable for children.
The soundtrack is truly lovely...specially the opening:

The seiyu's work is very remarkable.
In short, it is a must for any member that enjoys horror anime.
Here's an AMV I found:

And a small preview:

--------------------------------------------------
Btw, the manga does not seem bad at all.

Man, I'm reading Vagabond as of now, so I'm quite sensitive to this kind of setting, though they're not in the same period, they're still culturally loaded to the brim I'd bet, both of the series.
Thanks for the recommendation!

What's vagabond about?
Yeah, it doesn't actually explain anything xd I mean, they build the story and you get what's going by common sense because the Medicine Seller doesn't actually explain what kind of Mononoke are neither how they manifest on the human world (in episodes 1 and 2, there is these dharma dolls that show up vey often along the episodes. Obviously you know they have something to do with the Mononoke, but if you don't know what a dharma doll is, you'll be missing out!! xd This anime is very symbolic, and has many animation motives that would be better to research :p).
Np xd I just want to chat about Mononoke xd

Vagabond?! Oh Em Gee!!
You, you like the artistic aspects of entertainment most of the time if I know you well. READ. IT.
I mean, Vagabond is not only artisticaly accomplished, but also has a story so captivating you won't even notice if you're on fire while reading it!

Oh? Well, I preach checking out and finding out for yourself for at least one chapter/episode, so I'm going to do just that and then get back to you, we can then proceed to discuss my probably confusion. ( ・∀・) b

xd Ah...Well, yes, I like artistic aspects. Vagabond sounds very interesting (checking out first pages...*_* They're beautiful!)
Mononoke is a very short series actually. There are only 12 episodes. When I finish with them, I plan to watch the Ayakashi Japanese Classic Horror too :D

It is an awesome anime, have you watched Ayakashi too? I liked those stories as well.
I'm watching Ayakashi too. But tbh, I'm not liking the first story. It isn't bad, but I got to used to the suspense, art and direction of Mononoke. I was expecting something real bizarre and it didn't come :(
But I'm looking forward for the Medicine seller's story :D He's such a boss xd

For me it began with a bad feeling to be honest. That, since I compared it to other series, a foolish mistake. I even say to myself how one shouldn't compare series, and to others. Well, it's been a while since I've last done that, so it isn't valid any longer, but.. I'm so glad I continued reading, for me, because of the kind of person I am, I truly have been able to take my life more seriously reading Vagabond.
It looks so strange...and racist.
That's a mean thing to say like this, not elaborating on it.
Not that it is a must for you to understand why that is, in this thread, with these circumstances.. But posting a comment of such serious nature, surely requires motivation/explanation upon what it is you mean with it, otherwise you'll just end up throwing unnecessary misunderstandings all around you.

Please, what do you mean by it looking racist?

I hadn't read much samurai stories xd Lucky me xd I can't compare at all xd Anyway, it's very historical for what I can see in the first chapter. Damm, if I had read this earlier I would understand more. Few months ago, I went to a samurai expo in the INAH museum (INAH stands for National Institute of History and Anthropology). It was incredibly well made, and had so much names and wars and... xd Now I don't remember well the history part now U_U I remember vaguely some stuff related to the bushido...xd But some of the names ring a bell :p

It is! Many of the characters in this story are based on real life people, and events as well, like sekigahara, which makes this story somehow much enjoyable! Learning while entertaining yourself, then the author has succeeded in something great I'd say.

I was at such an expo in London once, a certain museum for culture and history(I'm a bit ashamed for not remembering the name here, as it is a really big museum, and probably well known!xd).
It was awesome, they had scrolls, swords, old whatchamacallit buildings with that traditional architecture. There was even a samurai armor!

Sekigahara was one of those names that rang a bell. But I agree it's something when you learn while entertaining your self. Mononoke does teach you some things too, but they're more related to the spiritual and symbolic world of Japanese ppl.
I actually have no idea of what museum you're talking about, but I saw samurai's armors too ;) The INAH museum organized the expo with the help and cooperation of the Japanese government ;)
