It would save space even if only a few MB`s they add up and with us haveing over 200`000 posts it also will let the poster know who said thanks and would more or less make the thread full of discussion instead of full of thank yous. Thus keeping more topics on subject.Its not a cure for spam but it will make the threads visually more pleaseing to look at.Also it will group all thank yous together.I have seen some threads where some one has been gone for a while and on page 4 or five they say thanks to the very first page where all the others are all on the first and second pages.
