I think he had a different eye power and when he sealed the juubi it mutated into a rinnegan .. Would explain his sons wierd spiral rinnegan and when his son had kids they prob got the hatred part of it the uchiha anyway and those who got the good side had the byakugan - ofcourse it's only a speculation but I think Mixing byakugan and sharingan might be like a forbidden awakening of a new kind of dojutsu (LOL)

Well the fact is that we don't know, whether or not, he had rinnengan before or after sealing the Juubi. But what we do know, is that he had rinnengan when he started to travel the world and spread/teach ninjutsu as a way to create peace.

Conclusion:
If we are told, whether he was jinchuriki before or after he traveled the world to spread ninjutsu, we will have the answer.

And just saying that rinnengan must come from Juubi since it looks alike is somewhat idiotic, but you may say that it "seems" like it has something to do with the Juubi.

However, one thing bothers me about this. In order to become jinchuriki of the juubi, you need the rinnengan, cause it is the only way to summon / use the shell of the juubi to store all the bijus.

So this questions this so called "look alike"-theory a lot, and it really suggests that rinnengan shouldn't be connected to the Juubi.

Besides it was the ridukou senin who gave the 9 beasts their different powers. Not the Juubi. Though it might be the Juubi that gave the ridukou senin the ability to give them such powers xd

What I think is SO6P had reningan before capture jubbi because when jinchuriki get some power as a host then still it only limited to the jinchuriki only and it would not passed down to his/her children but as reningan passed down so it makes sense that ridukou senin had reningan.

How did the sage beat juubi then?
He probably could use sage mode because him having perfected the study of chakra would know how to absorb natural energy.
This would allow him to be quick enough to dodge the massive attacks of the juubi.
Ok, so the question is how did he seal the juubi? In Naruto when not using sharingan as a cheap way to manipulate a bijuu, they usually go with
large constricting techs like mokuton (or doton).

Just gonna say: If the sage was born with Rinnegan, where did it come from? his dad? if so, how come he was the first to be able to use chakra?
I don't think it's logical to assume the sage inherited Rinnegan because it would mean he wasn't the first and everything just points to the sage being the first
I mean, if the sage was just a normal dude who discovered chakra it would make more sense than him having inherited it and the generations before the sage
just walked around with rinnegan having no clue what it was

My point is, either Rinnegan just randomly appeared from nowhere in the Sage's genes, got them from a clueless generation OR he got them from sealing the juubi which has always been pictured having the
"perfect form of rinnegan" (rinnegan with 6 tomoe)

Indeed, but it's not that far fetched. There have been many really powerful characters in Naruto that had to work their way up from nothing.
Look at Jiraiya, Hiruzen or Minato. I imagine the sage of six paths like kind of a mix out of these characters with sage mode (though without a specific animal theme), hax sealing techs and
a master at ninjutsu. No one can match the ten tails in raw power but the most powerful man in existence could seal him without any dojutsu
