I think Gremmy can only imagine over weaker people than him. As it was stated, it's a battle of reiatsus. Gremmy can't imagine Zaraki's body made of cookies or something like that, because his reiatsu is weaker. So he just imagines outside things to kill him.

Nah pretty sure its just if he wants to use his imagination on someone else's physical body he has to be touching them, which never occured against Kenpachi.
