Single Player you play on your own obviously [although the devs have talked of introducing "Co-op/LAN"]

In multiplayer, since it's in the beta stage still, you can only play with others via servers, my friend hosts one so I play with him, but you can get the IP's of others online, just type in "minecraft servers" in google, but expect lag since they're bound to be popular, or just learn how to setup your own server.

It's actually more than that.

Build stuff,survive,play games,exchange and kill monsters.
It is so creative,even to make items,you need to put them accordingly to their shape,chests,furnaces,workbenches...
It is the single most awesome game ever.
I do not regret paying 15 euros for this.
