Agreed. They were ranked the same when they left the village. Naruto came back and still was not promoted. Ranks in villages are official where as ranks outside of a village holds no weight.

Yeah, their profiles or whatever might say Genin, but no one really looks at them like that. Shikaku even said "Naruto is a Sage now" and they constantly call Sasuke a criminal. In fact, I don't think Sasuke is technically a Genin anymore as he isn't considered affiliated with the ninja system right now.
