Ever since Minato revealed his SM, people called it an asspull (and still do) because it came out of nowhere. Well let me clear this out of the way.
We all knew long ago that Minato had a summoning contract with the toads of Mount Myoboku:

Thus, there is a connection between Minato and Toads. Hence, there is a possibility for Minato to have learnt Toad SM. Now, look at the scans below.

Fukasaku clearly stated that Naruto has surpassed Jiraiya and Minato. But what did he mean by that? That Naruto has surpassed those two in the field of SM or overall as a ninja? I tend to believe the former because Fukasaku made that statement right after Naruto destroyed one of the Paths with SM. We don't know for sure but either way, it increases the likelihood that Minato had SM. Therefore, there has been some sort of foreshadowing that Minato had SM.

So the above panel didn't just come out of thin air.
Now, people may ask why didn't Minato use TSM in his previous fights. Well Minato said he hasn't used them before in combat:

He is terrible at SM. That's why Minato didn't use SM during the Nine-Tails incident and his fight against Ay & Killer Bee. In addition, he couldn't afford to stay still and gather natural energy in both situations. Minato had to deal with the masked man and the Nine-Tails - there was no time to sit still. The same case with Ay - Minato had no time to collect natural energy because Ay could kill him at any moment with his striking speed.
Now why didn't Minato use SM during his fight with Juubito considering that the black substance are incapable of negating senjutsu? It's simple - it's because he was being more of a support ninja rather than an offensive one.
We know Obito gained a signifcant boost in his speed when he became the Juubi's Jinchuuriki:

Something is needed to counter this speed. Minato's regular Shunshin (which is already very fast) is not quick enough to counter this speed and that's why Minato decided to use BM instead of SM. When he's in BM, his Shunshin is obviously faster and this benefits Minato and the SA as a whole.
Also, BM allows Minato to connect and share chakra to people. This played a significant role in the SA's escape from the 4TBBs:

So as you can see, Minato was better off staying in BM rather than SM during his fight against Obito. It hasn't been shown that he can use BSM so he could only choose to be in BM or SM. As other people could apply natural energy to their attacks (e.g. Naruto & Sasuke) there was no need for Minato to be in SM. It was better for him to stay in BM to act as a support (the above example highlights this importance).
What bothers me the most is the fact that he says he never really used it but his Sage Mode is perfect, vs Jiraya who always used it and his is imperfect.
-Kishi should have made Minato's sage mode imperfect to display that Minato rarely used it thus why he only showed it now. Just my thought

he never said he surpassed minato he said the ones that cam before doesn't mean he is talking about minato.you only proved minato used sage mode casue it was an asspull

Minato said he never really used it in battle. He could have just trained a lot off-field and perfected SM there. That's how Naruto perfected his SM. You do kinda have a point, though.
