Ok, i recently reread the original fight between oro and the 3rd. I wanna know who you think was in that 3rd coffin. Minato had been sealed with the reaper death seal, but recent discovery of oro's secret scroll could mean that he knows how to break the seal. If it is not that then it had to of been madara because as kabuto said they were researching everything about him and the sacred uchiha tablet.

Whats everyone else's opinion on this.
Please dont flame me if i missed anything. this is my first thought on the subject.

Minato cannot come back. His soul is with the reaper.

I don't think anybody can really deny that it was Minato after this panel without weak speculation:

Lol my 1st post in narutoBase was actually a thread with the exact same question xD
I guess it couldn't be Minato since he was sealed, or if it was him then it would've failed anyway because of the seal... but I don't think Oro would've used Madara back then.

Edit: ops was wrong, you got your answer i guess.

it couldnt have been minato since he's in the death god's belly. But im saying that the scroll recently found by suigetsu...oro couldve had that thing the entire time the 3rd jus made sure to close that coffin(if it was minato) because he knew he would not be capable to stop three former kage.

It was indeed Minato, but he would have been released from Edo Tensei even if Hiruzen hadn't stopped the coffin from rising; due to the fact that Minato's soul is trapped within the belly of the Death god.

I think we have a little mistake by Kishi here. It deffinitively was meant to be the Fourth who of course was sealed away and thus could not have been in that coffin. So, where is the big Problem with this?

We have seen how edo-tensei works from Kabuto. There is a Ritual needed to perform edo-tensei where a living sacrifice is beeing transformed into the person that is to be revived. The coffin afterwarts just stores the revived body, so it can be summoned later in a fight - like the fight Orochimaru vs Hiruzen. BUT if the person that is to be revived has been sealed, the Ritual should fail in the first place. In this case, there wouldnt be a coffin or an empty one at most. But then again, there would be no need for Orochimaru to even summon it?!

So maybe the third coffin was not meant to contain Minato? Dont think so. On the coffins there are the japanese letters ichi, ni and yon/shi meaning One, Two and Four directly pointing to the first, second and fourth Hokage.

I believe when the fight between Orochimaru and Hiruzen was made by Kishi, he hadnt had planed the details of edo-tensei completely leading to this slitely confusing 'interrupted' third coffin as seen in the battle. But we can safely assume, it was meant to be Minatos.

At least that's what I think.
